ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, as part of USF Health and Tampa General Hospital, is this region's only academic medical center, provides a level of expertise that is unmatched in the Tampa Bay area. Our clinical team includes four pediatric and five adult board-certified endocrinologists, two adult endocrine nurse practitioners, a clinical social worker, a mental health therapist, and five certified diabetes educators (three licensed dietitians and two registered nurses), diabetes technology specialists, a triage registered nurse, two licensed practice nurses, and three medical assistants to meet the needs of our patients.  In addition to diabetes, our providers care for a full spectrum of hormone-related conditions including bone and calcium disorders, thyroid, growth, adrenal, pubertal, menopausal, and transgender concerns that may lead to, short stature, early or late puberty, atypical sexual development. pituitary disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome and infertility, and adrenal disorders. Our Center works with other academic centers and industry partners to advance therapies and technologies to better enable patients to manage their disease and to ultimately prevent and cure endocrine disorders. The vision of the USF Diabetes and Endocrinology Center is to provide patient care, education, and research opportunities to youth and adults with diabetes and endocrine disorders and their families. As a state mandated diabetes education site, the Center provides diabetes education courses to hundreds of people with diabetes and their families each year. Counseling services are also available within the Center for patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders. The unit currently includes professionals in the areas of nutrition, diabetes education, counseling, public health, and research coordination. The Center provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary care for people with diabetes and endocrine disorders.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position utilizes education and expertise to oversee patient-related services and activities to help enhance the clinical research opportunities in the Diabetes Center.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluate potential research participants with Principal Investigator; schedule and perform screenings; screenings; explain consent process; randomize participants into appropriate research study. Assist with IRB submission and correspondence. Coordinate and schedule study visits and follow-ups. Oversee or perform required procedures for each visit; record data on each study participant according to research protocol, maintaining complete study progress notes and case report forms. Report Adverse Events according to protocol. Communicate questions, problems, changes to the Principal Investigator. Prepare and submit protocol applications, amendments, annual reviews, Adverse Event reports, and study sponsor communications to IRB as required.
Collect, analyze, and perform quality assurance of study data. Monitor overall clinical study to ensure quality control measures are in compliance with protocol. Oversee ordering, dispensing and maintenance of supplies and medications for the study.
Perform procedures as necessary, such as venipuncture, electrocardiograms, quantitative Sensory Testing, glucose/insulin testing, etc. for the study
Participate in specialty clinics, coordinating with clinic staff and physicians to evaluate patients that might be considered for research studies. Provides training and guidance in specialty area to patients and staff.
Assist in planning and performing research subject recruitment/screening at appropriate outreach events including camps/walks, and education/support events for patients, families, and care providers.
Collects, analyzes, and performs quality assurance of study data. Monitors overall clinical study to ensure that quality control measures are in compliance with protocol.
Recommend changes in protocols to improve quality of data gathering or overall study. Ensure consistent interpretation and adherence to protocols at all stages of trials by team members.
Oversees the ordering, dispensing and maintenance of supplies and medications for the research study.
Collaborate in development of new research grants, providing clinical nursing consultation in the development of protocols, research instrument design, coding and analysis, and selection of assessments. Assist in developing proposals for new research projects.
May serve as an advocate for a specific population by participation in community fairs, programs, committees; state and national committees, programs and conferences.
Cover evening and weekend research outreach events.
Actively travel to and participate in research study meetings to discuss progress/status of study.
Provide patient care in clinic and specialty areas per approved clinic protocols. Interview patients/families to obtain accurate health history. Make nursing diagnoses based on subjective and objective data collected. Implement appropriate treatment and referrals using established clinic protocols.
Order and conduct laboratory tests and diagnostic exams per approved protocols. Review labs and ensure follow up; monitor chart flow.
Utilize principles of Problem Oriented Recording (POR) and Subjective Objective Assessment Planning (SOAP) to diagnose and document patient records.
Recognize physical or emotional abnormalities that require immediate referral and takes appropriate action. Assist physician or nurse practitioner with special exams and procedures.
Administer medication, vaccines, and injections per protocol or physician order; records administration of medication.
Counsel patients in self-care prevention, treatment, and follow-up of problems.
Collaborate with clinical research assistants, clinical volunteers, and health professions students as needed.
May serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team to develop service plans for clients and offer total client care.
Attend professional meetings, workshops and seminars to keep abreast of changes in nursing. Perform other professional nursing and related administrative duties as assigned
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires licensure as a registered nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes, or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Chapter 64 B9, Florida Administrative Code. Bachelor's degree in Nursing with two years of nursing research or directly related experience; OR an Associate's degree in Nursing with four years of same experience. Annual certifications may be required to participate in specific studies.
PREFERRED:
Clinical research coordinator experience, bilingual (English/Spanish), and pediatric phlebotomy/IV insertion experience preferred.
