Position Focus:

The APRN/PA conducts and coordinates clinical research studies, working closely with the Primary Investigator (PI) and RN Coordinator; and in certain clinical trials as a Sub-I. Works closely with RN coordinator to implement and carry out study procedures in accordance with regulatory guidance (IRB). Human clinical trials and studies focus on novel anti-obesity pharmacotherapeutics for the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases.


Essential Duties

1. Examines patients to collect information about their physical condition and establishes a clinical diagnosis. 2. Conducts physicals, provides treatment, formulates a health care plan and counsels patients on various health practices. 3. Encourages compliance with treatments plan through education, assessment of patient understanding and regular patient monitoring. 4. Provides reasonable and prudent medical care, practices appropriate management, and uses sound clinical judgment based on best practice standards and evidenced based medicine. 5. Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination. 6. Provides preventive health practices to patients to maintain and improve health and prevent illness. 7. Coordinates patient care including ordering of laboratory tests and radiographic studies. 8. Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal. 9. Prescribes therapy or medication as necessary. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program or graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to conduct and coordinate multi-disciplinary clinical research projects and/or desire to learn to conduct clinical research.  Ability to work closely with Primary Investigator and to coordinate operation of study protocols with the RN Research Coordinator. Has knowledge and education or desire to learn about regulatory (IRB) requirements and guidelines.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to conduct informed consent procedures; ability to manage the treatment of obesity, and obesity-related conditions, in patients enrolled in the study protocols and in the clinical setting; ability to maintain accurate data sheets, report adverse events and recommend alternative actions; ability to manage study supply provision working with the RN coordinator.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to define the parameters and eligibility criteria for study enrollment to guide the clinical team in identifying viable research candidates. Ability to participate in the recruitment of study subjects for research protocols. Assisting with seeing patient in clinical follow up and engaging patients who are interested in becoming participants in clinical studies.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to educate participants in the use of study drugs and/or study devices; participate in the ongoing care of patients and oversight of participants enrolled in studies.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to evaluate patients throughout their treatment and monitor outcomes; participate in visits (in person and telehealth) and communication with patients, family, and caregivers. Initiative to ensure outstanding patient and participant care and safety.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

APRN with significant research experience working with human subjects and interest in performing study-related procedures/encounters is preferred. Candidates with strong clinical background; highly motivated to acquire skills needed to conduct human research and interested in performing study-related procedures will be considered. APRN candidates are required to see patients independently.


Required Licenses or Certifications

CT APRN license (or eligible) with ANA certification OR CT PA license (or eligible).Prescriptive privileges (or eligible) in the State of Connecticut, federal DEA license and CT DCP license for prescription of controlled substances.


Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, and occasional slight lifting. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds when transferring a patient from chair or wheelchair to exam table and turning patients for examination. Proper body mechanics must be used when maneuvering patients.


Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

Master's Degree from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program or graduation from a Physician Assistant (PA) Training Program accredited by the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education.
