Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Campus Health (CH) is a multi-specialty ambulatory college health clinic providing quality, and affordable health care for eligible students and spouses. Annually, CH has more than 80,000 patient encounters, which includes Primary Care and Gynecology as well as specialty clinics in sports medicine, orthopedics, physical therapy, counseling and psychological services, travel clinic and allergy clinic. Saturday acute care is provided from 8-5 PM. The convenience clinic at Student Stores offers brief, walk-in visits Monday-Friday for a limited number of non-life threatening injuries and illnesses. On site ancillary services include pharmacy, OTC pharmacy, Student Stores pharmacy, medical laboratory, and radiology. Campus Health has been continuously accredited since 1986 by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. All personnel are trained in the concepts and principles of Performance Improvement and serve as team members and leaders in shaping and defining the organization as it strives to provide quality and safe care. Campus Health collaborates with Student Wellness and Campus Recreation and other Student Affairs partners to provide education and outreach to assist in keeping the campus population healthy. Education and research comprise another important function of CH. CH provides clinical rotations and practicums for students in the School of Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health, Department of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Health and Radiology. In addition, CH serves as a research site for a number of faculty and graduate student grants and contracts, where CH staff participates with the principal investigators across a variety of medical specialties.
Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner is a highly skilled licensed practitioner who can work with a high level of independence to provide high quality health care, on a full-time basis, to UNC CH Students and Postdoctoral fellows. The position requires the ability to function as an individual practitioner, as a member of the health care team, and as an advocate for health of the University Community at the population level. This position provides care for patients at the convenience clinic at Student Stores.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and ‘approved to practice medical acts’ by the Joint Subcommittee.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Professional Knowledge: Training and certification as a Nurse Practitioner with full knowledge of techniques of patient interviewing and medical history review, health appraisal tools using an electronic medical record, interpretation of laboratory test results, and therapeutic procedures related to primary care including women’s health.
Knowledge to develop patient care plans based on assessment and findings.
Patient Care: Ability to assess, and treat patients in a clinical or medical setting. Ability to manage the physical and mental well-being of patients through on going education and prevention. Must be able to apply full knowledge of patient care protocols, medical guidelines and clinical procedures in primary care (acute and chronic care) and in college health care and Women’s Health. Must be able to interact with patients, patient’s family members, students, and other medical staff to coordinate medical needs and services in an effective manner.
Excellent Communication Skills: Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and work relationships with physicians, health care personnel, patients and families, agencies directing review programs, and others.
Familiarity with electronic health records.

- Progressive experience in a primary care setting.
- Experience and enthusiasm for working with college age population
