Job Summary

This position is located within the Medical Surveillance program, a unit of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) in the Department of Public Health Sciences. The program has 36 state and government contracts, each ranging from $30,000 to $5.5 million. The core activities of the COEH are to educate future leaders in occupational and environmental health, develop new knowledge, and bring the resources of the University of California to people affected by health hazards in their workplaces or communities.

The Nurse Practitioner serves as team leader and will directly supervise medical surveillance staff while on site at various work locations. The Nurse Practitioner provides occupational health services including, but not limited to pre-employment, DMV, Respiratory, Hazardous Materials, and POST physicals, as well as ancillary testing and immunizations to meet the health and safety needs of various companies, state and government agencies throughout California. Services are provided by the Nurse Practitioner and support staff working under the clinical direction of the program Medical Director. Operational oversight is provided by the Program Manager and Community Health Outreach Supervisor. Examinations are provided in a variety of locations with our mobile medical unit and on site at our occupational health clinic located at 3301 C Street, Sacramento, CA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year or greater experience as a nurse practitioner 
  • Graduation with a master’s degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License
  • California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Certificate within 3 months of hire
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area
  • Demonstrated medical knowledge to take a complete and accurate patient history.
  • Knowledge to perform the appropriate physical examinations.
  • Knowledge to document information in problem-oriented charting.
  • Medical knowledge to provide preventive medical care.
  • Ability to perform simple laboratory tests and determine abnormalities of laboratory reports.
  • Demonstrated skill to use medical knowledge to diagnose common medical conditions and provide adequate patient education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NIOSH Certification in Spirometry.
  • NRCME Certification.
  • CAHOC Certification in Audiometry.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and NIOSH recommendations.
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
  • Willingness to drive a medical mobile unit (RV).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This position is critical and employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends. Some overnight stays may be required.
  • Must Possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Must participate in the DMV pull notice program.
  • Must be able to intermittently travel overnight for up to 5 days at a time.
  • Must be trained to drive a RV (mobile clinic).
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
  • Must obtain certification in spirometry and audiometry testing.

  • This position is a critical position and subject to a background check and drug screen. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history, identity checks and drug screen.
