Position Summary

Under the direction of the Student Health Services (SHS) Chief of Staff, and under medical supervision of a Physician, the Nurse Practitioner: plans, provides and evaluates primary health care to males and females with common illnesses and injuries; reviews and interprets patient's history; performs physical examinations; reviews test results to assess patients’ problems and needs; and performs collaborative consultations with Physicians regarding more complicated health problems or conditions not covered by protocols.

 

Position Information

Provide Primary Healthcare Services

  • Use established protocols within the Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice;
  • Work independently according to guidelines and practices described in SHS Physician-approved protocols;
  • Obtains detailed health histories and perform complete physical examinations using applicable clinical techniques and diagnostic tools;
  • Establish, diagnose and document healthcare plans, disposition, referrals and prognosis in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) using the subjective, objective, assessment, and plan (SOAP) format;
  • Diagnose common acute and chronic illnesses and injuries;
  • Develop and implement treatment plans based on evaluation of patients' health history physical examination and test results;
  • Furnish medications to patients according to the supervising Physician's protocols and Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations;
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding health problems, family planning, emotional problems, acute mental health problems, preventative healthcare and health care maintenance;
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding use of medications and seek patient and provider concordance for prescribed therapeutic regimens;
  • Provide urgent care in setting with high patient volume;
  • Perform other procedures and minor surgeries, such as injections, immunizations, placement and removal of implantable contraceptive device, suturing lacerations, skin biopsies, incisions and drainage, wound care, minor orthopedic procedures;
  • Maintain compliance with established university policies, procedures, and protocols for quality assurance and infection control;
  • Establish and document health care plans and prognoses, and maintain records in SHS approved system and format;
  • Document each patient encounter in a manner that will enable other providers or peer reviewing group to evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness of the plan;
  • Order, interpret and evaluate routine lab tests and other diagnostic tests and procedures including x-ray examinations;
  • Perform simple CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) waived tests including Urinalysis (U/A), Urine Pregnancy testing, Rapid Strep, Finger Stick Glucose, Provider Performed Microscopy (PPM);
  • Provide emergency/disaster care during a campus disaster;
  • Use computers, including internet browser, email, Microsoft Office, EHR and the practice management software applications used at SHS;
  • Use equipment in SHS clinics and urgent care including Electrocardiogram (EKG), Spirometer, Defibrillator and Nebulizer; and
  • Provide health education, SHS outreach, administrative duties and emergency response duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge:

Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner; and general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction.

Abilities:

Possess the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals; use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools; interpret laboratory and other test results; keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent’s scope of practice; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and, if assigned, provide lead work direction to specified health center support staff.

Education and Experience:

Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

 

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience providing healthcare services to young adults.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze emergency situations accurately and to take prompt appropriate action including performance of therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform patient assessment and triage.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide Urgent Care in high patient volume environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform minor surgeries, including the suturing of lacerations.
  • Must pass a credentialing check including verification of education, training, and licensure.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Required License/Certification

Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. In addition, if the incumbent is delegated the authority to furnish medications, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If the furnishing procedures include the delegated authority to furnish specific controlled substances, incumbents must also possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate. Current CPR certificate.
