Job Summary

The CCNP may rotate through all of the focused care ICUs at the medical center including: cardiothoracic, neurologic, neurosurgical, medical, general surgical, and transplant.  The CCNP shall work collaboratively with physician students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. The CCNP will participate in the precepting of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) students and post graduate fellows.

Department Description

The primary responsibility of the Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) is providing and directing care for patients in the adult ICUs at the UCSF Medical Center.  The CCNP is responsible for maintaining quality of care standards for all procedures and clinical care provided in the ICUs.  The CCNP provides self-direction and accountability in the development of this role within the medical center.

The CCNP shall provide medical and nursing care under the supervision of the Physician Director of Adult Critical Care Medicine and their individual collaborating physicians. The CCNP shall provide care in accordance with standardized procedures. The CCNP shall be proficient in the areas of arterial catheter insertion, central venous catheter insertion, ventilator management, sedation, and pain control.  The Medical Staff Office on a biannual basis grants privileges to practice at UCSF Medical Center.

The CCNP may rotate through all of the focused care ICUs at the medical center including: cardiothoracic, neurologic, neurosurgical, medical, general surgical, and transplant.  The CCNP shall work collaboratively with physician students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. The CCNP will participate in the precepting of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) students and post graduate fellows. This position is scheduled for 12 hour rotating shifts from days to nights including holidays and weekends.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum one (1) year of recent experience working in Adult Critical Care as a Nurse Practitioner or completion of an accredited critical care practice transition program.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the following areas:  clinical practice, communication, clinical case management, leadership/problem identification/resolution, and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited critical care practice transition program.
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent experience as an inpatient Adult Nurse Practitioner in an academic medical center.
  • Author of publication in peer reviewed journal. 
  • Experience as faculty or instructor in graduate nursing program

License/Certification

  • California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.
  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.
  • Current ACLS
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Neurocritical Care Society Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification upon hire.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
