Job Summary

the incumbent provides direct clinical services for people with opioid use disorder at the main clinic site (OTOP) on the campus of San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH); at the Bayview Mobile Methadone site; and at the San Francisco County Jail (SFCJ). This position has a primary focus working in the SFCJ but will also include working at the other sites. Primary duties include intake to methadone treatment, management of the induction period, ongoing medication management, annual visits, addressing urgent/timely issues for ongoing patients, and additional services related to the overall provision of care and mission of the program.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Psychiatry at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is dedicated to providing culturally competent services to the diverse patient population we serve. Providing a range of clinical services informed by evidence-based practices, the Department of Psychiatry provides care to thousands of patients each year. The Division of Substance Abuse and Addiction Medicine (DSAAM) provides multi-disciplinary consultation and treatment for patients with substance use disorders at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). DSAAM provides opiate replacement therapy for heroin and other opiate addiction through the Opiate Treatment Outpatient Program (OTOP) at Ward 93 as a well-established and proven effective methadone treatment program.


Required Qualifications

  • Two (2)+ years experience working as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • One (1) year experience as a Nurse Practitioner providing treatment for substance use disorder.
  • Must be able to obtain Medical Staff privileges through San Francisco General Hospital.
  • Must be able to obtain SF County Jail Clearance.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to work in a high stress, high volume area and work well under pressure and with deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately, and be detailed oriented. Ability to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes. Knowledge of medical, psychiatric, and addiction specific terminology.
  • Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds.
  • An understanding of addiction medicine issues and sensitivity toward persons with substance use disorders.
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance.
  • Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior related UC experience.
  • Training as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
  • Experience working in a correctional setting or reentry after incarceration.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English.

License/Certification

  • California driver’s license.
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.

  • Must hold current and active RN, NP, and NP Furnishing licenses in California.
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for environments.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
