Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, the incumbent’s primary focus is direct clinical services for people with opioid use disorder at the main clinic site (OTOP) on the campus of San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH); at the Bayview Mobile Methadone site; and at the San Francisco County Jail (SFCJ). Primary duties include intake to methadone treatment, management of the induction period, ongoing medication management, annual visits, addressing urgent/timely issues for ongoing patients, and additional services related to the overall provision of care and mission of the program. This position has a secondary focus as a Lead Nurse Practitioner which includes assigning and reviewing work product for other NP team members working at OTOP and in the SFCJ and providing mentorship as desired for less experienced NP staff.

Department Description

The Opiate Treatment Outpatient Program (OTOP) and the mobile methadone van provide methadone maintenance and other adjunctive services to people with opioid use disorder. The OTOP Jail Methadone Program provides methadone intake, induction and maintenance services within the SF County Jail system.

The target population for OTOP's methadone maintenance service is low-income people with opioid use disorder who reside in San Francisco, primarily in the South of Market, Mission, Castro, and Tenderloin areas. This includes a large proportion of African Americans and Latinos, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and post-partum women. The target population includes people of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, religions or spiritualities, socioeconomic classes, partner statuses, and physical and mental disabilities. OTOP clients are low-income and primarily insured by Medicaid or Medicare. Patients have multiple comorbid conditions including other substance use disorders, medical and mental health issues, and are impacted by a range of challenging social determinants of health.This population has a relatively high risk for HIV and Hepatitis C.


Required Qualifications

  • 20+ years experience working as a Nurse Practitioner
  • 15 year experience as a Nurse Practitioner providing treatment for opioid use disorder in specialized clinic setting
  • Must be able to obtain Medical Staff privileges through San Francisco General Hospital
  • Must be able to obtain SF County Jail Clearance
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to work in a high stress, high volume area and work well under pressure and with deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately, and be detail oriented. Ability to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities and complete reports within required timeframes. Knowledge of medical, psychiatric, and addiction specific terminology
  • Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds
  • Demonstrated expertise in addiction medicine and sensitivity toward persons with substance use disorders
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance
  • Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior related UC experience
  • Training as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Experience working in a correctional setting or reentry after incarceration
  • Bilingual Spanish/English

License/Certification

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.

  • California driver’s license
  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work
  • Accepted Certifications for this position: AGNP-C,A-GNP-C ANP, FNP-C, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC.
  • Must hold an active RN, NP, and NP Furnishing licenses in California
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Must hold an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day.  CCS enrollment as appropriate for environments
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
