Job Summary

The Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS), funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is a collaborative, multi-center, longitudinal study designed to comprehensively investigate the progression of HIV with a specific focus on aging outcomes (cardiac, lung, neurocognitive, and physical function, and cancer), HIV pathogenesis, and health disparities. A total of 500 HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected high-risk men and women will be enrolled in the San Francisco MWCCS, which includes a sub-site at the University of Southern California. In addition to the core study, study participants may also be enrolled in a number of associated sub-studies.  Participants will be seen annually for the core study and for sub-studies according to the individual protocols. Study visits for the core study consist of a comprehensive interview covering participant’s medical history and health care utilization, psychosocial status, substance use history and sexual behavior. Blood is drawn for immediate testing and for repository. Participants also undergo a medical exam and biospecimen collection. 

The Nurse Practitioner II (NP) will be responsible for working with the Principal Investigators (PIs), Project Director, and Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) to implement multiple research protocols within the MWCCS and associated substudies. The NP will oversee daily clinic operations, perform and document physical and pelvic examinations, and specimen collection according to study protocols, and maintain research records. Enter collected data into electronic databases and CRFs. Perform phlebotomy, interviews, packaging of specimens, and coordinate with the courier. If colposcopy certified, will coordinate the colposcopy as indicated. Review lab results, diagnose and treat gynecological disorders and related illnesses per protocol. Counsel participants regarding abnormal results and refer for primary or specialty care when indicated.

The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, Zuckerberg San Francisco General - ZSFG, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System - SFVAHCS and Mt. Zion) and 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rests with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites, and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and SFVAHCS sites. Required Qualifications

•    Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing
•    Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
•    Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the State of California
•    Current American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
•    Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) license as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of California
•    Certificate of completion from a college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program
•    NP furnishing license and verification of experience to furnish (for NPs who will be writing prescriptions only)
•    National certification in the area of specialty (NPII+)
•    Ability to obtain the specific certification to administer study measures per individual study protocols within 3 months of employment.
•    Successful completion of the credentialing process
•    Possess more than 6 months of related work experience.
•    Possesses the skills, knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position
•    Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
•    Demonstrated effective verbal and interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact with a diverse study population (HIV-infected, mentally ill and drug users).
•    Ability to independently interpret and apply protocols, respond to requests, resolve issues, and provide guidance and assistance to research staff in a team-oriented environment
•    Demonstrated history of excellent attendance and reliability
•    Willingness and ability to work in Oakland and/or San Francisco clinics as needed

Note: Physical/health screening required.


Preferred Qualifications

•    Colposcopy certification
•    Minimum three years of professional experience as a Nurse Practitioner (NP)
•    Ability to administer study protocols and questionnaires in English/Spanish.
•    Prior UCSF employment
•    Prior clinical research experience in women’s health
•    Prior experience working with electronic medical records
•    Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
Good Clinical Practice Guidelines
Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The Protection of Human Research Participants
Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations for recruitment and consent of research participants
Effective Cash Handling Procedures
Environmental Health and Safety Training  


License/Certification
