Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to provide care to patients in a hospital setting in one or more specialized areas under the direction of a physician. The accepted candidate will be required to provide clinical excellence, scholarly enthusiasm, and a track record of excellent clinical performance. The provider will have direct patient care responsibilities.


Job Purpose

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a clinical setting in an area of specialization under the direction of a physician.


Job Duties
  • Provide care for thoracic surgery patients in the operating room, intensive care unit, floor, and clinic as directed by thoracic surgery faculty. In addition, you will participate in quality improvement and clinical research activities with the thoracic surgery faculty.
  • Order appropriate perioperative diagnostic exams, including x-rays, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures, when appropriate.
  • Provide clinical coverage for Ben Taub cardiac and thoracic services as assigned.
  • Assist cardiac and thoracic surgeons at Ben Taub as assigned.
  • Administer simple therapeutic procedures, such as injections, suturing, wound care, nasal gastric tube placement, Foley catheter placement.
  • Provide patient education regarding therapeutic regimens, home care, and health maintenance.
  • Evaluate patients in subspecialty clinic setting and determine an initial treatment and strategy.
  • Provide routine follow-up for patients who have simple surgical procedures.
  • Provide case management for outpatients by coordinating referrals, appointments, treatments, etc.
  • Coordinate with perioperative clerical coordinator in arranging clinic visits and preoperative screening visits for patients on the surgical waiting list.
  • Provide direction and support to PA/NP students assigned to the Thoracic Surgery Service
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, as requested.
  • Assume the primary role of continuity of care for patients on the Thoracic Surgery Service at the Ben Taub General Hospital, from the preoperative to postoperative period.
  • In addition to rounding with the service team, you will coordinate and contribute, as a team, to daily patient care, which includes proceed.
  • Participate in educational activities concordant with the service, which include weekly pulmonary conference and monthly heart team meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Required: Master’s degree in in Nursing.
  • Experience Required: None required.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
