Job Summary
The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner is a licensed nurse who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert advanced practice nursing in critical care. The primary responsibility of the Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) is providing and directing care for patients in the adult ICUs at the UCSF Medical Center. The CCNP is responsible for maintaining quality of care standards for all procedures and clinical care provided in the ICUs. The CCNP provides self-direction and accountability in the development of this role within the medical center.
The CCNP shall provide medical and nursing care under the supervision of the Physician Director of Adult Critical Care Medicine and their individual collaborating physicians. The CCNP shall provide care in accordance with standardized procedures. The CCNP shall be proficient in the areas of arterial catheter insertion, central venous catheter insertion, ventilator management, sedation, and pain control. The Medical Staff Office on a biannual basis grants privileges to practice at UCSF Medical Center.
The CCNP – Medical ICU (MICU) will primarily be based in the Medical ICU. However, may rotate through all of the focused care ICUs at the medical center if needed, including: cardiothoracic, neurologic, neurosurgical, medical, general surgical, and transplant. The CCNP shall work collaboratively with physician students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. The CCNP will participate in the precepting of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) students and post graduate fellows. This position is scheduled for 12 hour rotating shifts from days to nights including holidays and weekends.
UCSF Medical Center requires all APPs to be credentialed through its Medical Staff Office in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). This process may take up to 90 days and must be completed prior to the start date in any APP position.

Required Qualifications
- Current RN & NP licensure by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- California furnishing license upon hire.
- Current DEA license
- ANCC or AANP certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
- A minimum of one year of recent experience working in Adult Critical Care as a Nurse Practitioner.
- A Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification.
- Current American Heart Association ACLS certification.
- Neurocritical Care Society Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification upon hire.
- Submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day.
- This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
- Demonstrated excellence in the following areas: clinical practice, communication, clinical case management, leadership/problem identification/resolution, and teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited critical care practice transition program
- A minimum of 2 years of recent experience as an inpatient Adult Nurse Practitioner in an academic medical center.
- Experience with quality improvement and/ or research.
- Author of publication in peer reviewed journal
- Experience as faculty or instructor in graduate nursing program
License/Certification
- California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.
- Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.
- Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
- Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner.
- Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
- Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
- Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
- Must hold current AHA ACLS as minimum requirement
- State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice
- Must maintain Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification
