Summary of Job Duties:

The Nurse Educator works under the direction of the UAMS IDHI Stroke Program Director of Operations and is responsible to provide leadership in the area of emergency department management of patients with acute medical
conditions such as acute ischemic stroke through the use of telemedicine. Must have a full understanding of evidence-based treatment practices related to specific acute patient conditions; Must have a full understanding of the use of telemedicine and population based care in order to increase access to care for rural areas of the state.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree Nursing PLUS three (3) years RN or educator/instructor experience including 3 years in Emergency or Critical Care and 2 years leadership (charge nurse, nurse management or other leadership experience)
  • Licenses, certificates, or registration: RN

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Advanced skill with Microsoft Office applications and data analytics software

Proficient in; Microsoft office software including excel, word, and PPT. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook email/calendar and electronic medical record software.

Physical Requirements: ability to push, pull and assist with carrying the inflatable mega brain (approx. 100lbs), standing for lectures/teaching events

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree Nursing PLUS three (3+) years RN, 3+ years Emergency or Critical Care, 2+ years leadership (charge nurse, nurse management or other leadership experience) 5+ years Paramedic
  • Licenses, certificates, or registration: Paramedic

Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Providing clinical support to ensure that hospital emergency department staff are successful in treating acute ischemic stroke.
  • Ensures the IDHI Stroke Programs clinical protocols, keeping all current with best practices.
  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the IDHI Stroke Program and develops solutions within assigned IDHI Stroke Program hospitals and telemedicine facilities.
  • Utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to provide guidance to the ED physicians and care teams on the care of stroke patients that is family and patient centered. Participates in formal quality, performance improvement and research projects annually or as needed.
  • Consults directly with the IDHI Stroke Program Director of Operations and the Assistant Director.
  • There is routine in-state travel with some overnight stays required for this position.

Outreach Participates

  • Participates in outreach activities for the UAMS IDHI Stroke Program. Routine on-site visits with assigned hospitals, within a region, are conducted to review AHA AIS treatment time targets, identify opportunities for improvement through QI data analysis perform clinical case reviews and review contract deliverables.
  • Conducts quality reviews of live tele-stroke consults and provides feedback to the hospital Nurse Facilitator for areas of improvement within the consult including the NIHSS assessment and the administration of alteplase.
  • Provides leadership to hospital management and care team providers through appropriate means when corrective actions are required.
  • Assists assigned hospitals with required community outreach initiatives as needed.

Training/Education

  • Maintains the IDHI Stroke Programs training and clinical protocols keeping all current with best practices.
  • Evaluates the program to address identified deficiencies/learning needs within IDHI Stroke Program hospitals, telemedicine facilities.
  • Understands and assures the use of appropriate IDHI Stroke Program clinical education program initiatives and imparts this knowledge to hospital faculty/staff across Arkansas as appropriate.
  • Identifies barriers or concerns which interfere with the learning process and suggest alternatives for resolution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
