Position Summary
The clinical trials groups within the Cardiology Division bridges the realm of bench science with that of the daily clinical care rendered to patients within our healthcare system. Through clinical trials, its principal investigators and trials staff provide the mechanism for the collection of data to determine the efficacy and safety of new pharmaceuticals and devices. Trial recruitment and management is critical to the success of the program and relies heavily on the independent work of study coordinators and nurses. There are 2 distinct groups managing clinical trials – heart failure and general cardiology. In addition, several faculty work on investigator-initiated research, employing clinical and administrative staff, interns, and work study students to assist. The general cardiology clinical trials group manages a complex array of Industry, NIH and investigator-initiated trials. 
The nurse consultant in the clinical trials unit serves as both clinical resource and Trial Coordinator. 
As coordinator, this person coordinates and conducts complex aspects of research activities supported by the Division of Cardiology. The Nurse will work closely with the Principal Investigators to achieve study goals within the required timeframe. Guidelines for each clinical trial are developed by the sponsoring agency and approved by the University of North Carolina. The role of the clinical trials coordinator central to the success of the trial in managing participant recruitment, ensuring timely achievement of milestones, timely and accurate data submission, adherence to the protocol. As coordinator, he/she works with delegated authority from the Principal Investigator to
ensure that these clinical trials are conducted in a manner to meet all federal, sponsor and university requirements. When a commitment is made to begin the study, the coordinator ensures an efficient prep phase and begins to enroll participants as soon as possible. Due to the nature of these studies, participant screening requires timely review of the medical record, Interpretation of lab results and clinical findings. The coordinator becomes the primary point of contact for the participant (regarding the study) and must instill confidence, able to answer specific questions, and knowing when medical guidance or contact is required. The coordinator is responsible for recruitment of patients, coordination of visits, data collection, recording and submission. The nurse consultant must have in-depth medical and pathology knowledge. The nurse works under the supervision of the Physician Pl but must exercise excellent clinical judgment in patient monitoring and care. In addition to servicing as nurse resource for trials in which the nurse is the primary coordinator, the nurse is available to the other members of the trials team to provide clinical guidance and resources. determining patient eligibility for. This position must anticipate the physical, but also the psychological needs of patients who suffer chronic disease and its related Issues Including uncontrolled pain or infection which results in risks of amputation. This position is the liaison between the patient and the study physician, facilitating efficient use of the physician’s time, and ensuring that patients are properly educated and informed about the research study and what is to be expected.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in the area of specialization.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in nursing. 
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with patients.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preferred candidate with 2 years’ experience in the area of cardiovascular disease and 2 years’ experience in clinical research in either industry or clinical setting. A high level of organizational skills is preferred. Experience with Epic a plus.
