Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Founded in 1950, our Department of Maternal and Child Health is one of the world’s leading academic departments for research, teaching and practice. We are dedicated to improving the health of women, children and families – domestically and globally. Our teaching program provides students with broad exposure to maternal and child health population needs and priorities, as well as with the skills to become leaders of tomorrow. Currently the department has 31 faculty members, 20 of whom have primary appointments in Maternal and Child Health (MCH). Complementing these faculty are four emeritus members, and more than 65 adjunct faculty, many of whom hold leadership positions in MCH research and practice settings. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our department, faculty and staff research interests and activities span the full array of issues and areas of focus for the maternal and child health population. Our initiatives are designed to create new knowledge and directly improve the health of this population. |
Position Summary | This position serves as the Regional Child Care Nurse Consultant for the southern region of North Carolina. The position will be the primary source for CCHCs to contact about issues regarding health and safety needs in child care. County coverage include, but is not limited to the following: Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Jones, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, and Sampson. The position provides leadership in assessment and development of child care health services in NC. He/she is responsible for development of training and educational materials, providing training for child care facilities, delivering consultation and technical assistance, and program planning, implementation, and evaluation. Support for the NC Health and Safety Assessment tool is required. The position requires staying up-to-date on current rules, regulations, and health and safety knowledge and collaborating and communicating with local, state and community agencies. He/she must disseminate knowledge and expertise to CCHCs and child care facilities through regional meetings, conferences, webinars, email, and any other appropriate channels. He/she will work closely with the other Child Care Nurse Consultants in the state to support and develop strategies to expand the existing CCHC network. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in the area of specialization. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | The CCHC Coach/Nurse Consultant must have full knowledge of child care health consultation, coaching, and other modalities of technical assistance. In addition, the specialist must have extensive knowledge of child health and access to health care, child care regulations, child care resources, and current child care issues at the local, state, and national levels. The specialist must have special knowledge of resources in the area of child care health, safety, and nutrition and be able to support child care health consultants in their efforts to improve the health and safety of children in early care and education settings. The CCHC Coach/Nurse Consultant must be open to feedback, self-aware or willing to develop self-awareness around strengths, weaknesses, emotions, patterns, and behaviors, and how these traits impact their work. The person must be motivated to try to new things, develop new habits, and be dedicated to the process of coaching CCHCs. This position requires an ability and interest in learning new ways to think, new behaviors, and new skills. The CCHC Coach/Nurse Consultant must have excellent training skills to manage, develop curriculum and conduct training sessions. This position requires strong oral communication skills as this position must respond to requests clearly and unambiguously and to use active listening with clear, reflective, and supporting responses. Grammar, diction, and telephone etiquette must be superior. The CCHC Coach/Nurse Consultant must have the ability to use word-processing, spreadsheet, data base management, and other office software and be familiar with internet access tools. The consultant must have strong organizational skills and have strong attention to detail and accuracy. Writing skills should be strong in grammar, style, and accuracy. Ability to evaluate credible source material for use in documenting written products is essential. Required to be a Qualified Child Care Health Consultant (or willing to take course) and a registered nurse. This position must have the capacity to work independently. She/he must engage in professional development to remain current in child health and child care health consultant responsibilities. A primary function of this position is to strengthen and guide the expansion of the current system of CCHCs in North Carolina. Position agrees to having a home office in the southern region of the state, although checks in with the main office in Raleigh at least weekly. Position will be available by phone, email, and skype as means to ensure he/she is easily available for communication with colleagues in Raleigh. Must have a valid driver’s license. |
