Job Summary

The CRNA Supervisor is a role model, expert clinician, administrative supervisor, and mentor in clinical, professional leadership in the department, ensuring that all CRNAs are trained and competent in the skill sets required to provide safe patient care in the specialty Anesthesia and Perioperative Services. The incumbent is a working supervisor and is required to work clinically in direct patient care while performing administrative and leadership functions.

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Supervisor manages, coordinates, and administers the practice of advanced healthcare professionals, including Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. 

The nurse anesthetist supervisor provides leadership to nurse anesthetist in anesthetic and perioperative services and supports the nurse anesthetist manager. The primary managerial responsibility of the supervisor is to provide professional support to nurse anesthetist at all UCSF Campuses where CRNAs are providing anesthetic care. The primary clinical responsibility of the CRNA Supervisor is the direct application of clinical expertise to patients and families treated by the department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Services.


Department Description

CRNAs at UCSF are a vital component of the Anesthesia Department and Perioperative Services and a collaborative member of the Anesthesia Care Teams (ACT). CRNAs provide anesthesia services at all the UCSF medical center campuses to a variety of patients across the life span.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • Master of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
  • Responsible for understanding and communicating an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local educational and legislative issues affecting nurse anesthetist. Demonstrated knowledge of state and national regulatory requirements.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability in advanced written and verbal communications skills. Able to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of a specific individual, including the patient’s age which can include both adults and pediatric age groups.
  • Ability to gather clinical information, develop differential diagnoses, and create problem lists independently. Competent to direct patient management and lead care team.
  • Excellent leadership and operational management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • DNP
  • One (1) year of leadership experience in an academic setting.
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance. Participates in decisions on human resources matters.

License/Certification

  • Current Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Current Nurse Anesthetist license in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • National Board Certification for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
