Overview:  

 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Nuclear Materials Transportation and Logistics Specialist to support our world class radioisotope production programs. Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials and ensure the safe and effective execution of radioisotope supply programs.

 

This position resides in the Process Coordination Group (PCG) within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at ORNL. The highly accomplished staff within the ISED use the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), to produce a variety of important medical, scientific, and industrial radioisotopes. These include several alpha emitting radioisotopes either deployed or under clinical trial for treatment of cancer (e.g., Ac-225, Ac-227); heavy actinides Bk-249, Es-254, and Fm-257 for fundamental chemistry research and new element discovery; Cf-252 for neutron emitting applications; and Pu-238 for space exploration.

 

This position will focus primarily on the shipping and logistics of fresh and irradiated neptunium oxide, as well as plutonium oxide product.  The scope will span intra-site transfers within ORNL as well as inter-site shipments to and from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the point of contact for the radioisotope production programs when transferring nuclear materials across the Department of Energy (DOE) complex.
  • Compile required material data packages to customer specifications.
  • Work closely with Product Engineers and Product Leads to coordinate the logistics of nuclear material transfers within ORNL.
  • Maintain an active awareness of the locations and movements of nuclear materials relevant to the supported programs.
  • Participate in strategic planning of nuclear material moves to maximize radioisotope production throughput.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in transportation, logistics, or a related field.
  • Advance DOT qualification.
  • Advanced IATA qualification.
  • Ability to set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success working with customers and stakeholders across the DOE complex.

 

Special Requirements:

 

Q clearance:  This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
