Job Summary
Position Description
The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) seeks to fill a clinical instructional faculty position in Speech Language Pathology (Professor of Instruction or of Practice, open rank). This position requires eligibility for licensure as a speech-language pathologist in the state of Texas, certification by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (CCC-SLP), and the ability to provide clinical supervision in preverbal child language development. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate level courses within the successful applicants’ discipline in addition to clinical instructional responsibilities. Applicants with the ability to teach in language development/language disorders, phonetics, and/or anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, are encouraged. Professors of Instruction/Practice also advise MS students, serve on program, department, school, and university committees, participate in student development activities, and perform administrative duties as appropriate. Teaching load, practicum responsibilities, and other duties are assigned based on needs determined by the appropriate Program Head, Department Chair, and Dean. 
Professor of Instruction/Practice is a full-time, 9-month non-tenure-track position with opportunity for summer salary.
The appointments will commence for the fall 2024 semester.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology, clinical credentials, licensure, and previous clinical supervision experience are required prior to employment as a Professor of Practice. Candidates for a Professor of Instruction appointment require a doctoral degree in Communication Sciences or a related field. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Education and Experience: A doctoral degree in Communication Sciences or a related field (e.g. Speech, Language and Hearing, Communication Disorders, Linguistics, Phonetics) and demonstrated ability to teach a variety of core, advanced and elective undergraduate courses are preferred. Candidates seeking Associate Professor of Instruction/Practice or Full Professor of Instruction/Practice appointments should have experience and qualifications commensurate with those positions.
The Department/Program/School
The UT Dallas Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing is home to a thriving undergraduate program with multiple tracks that support students with diverse career interests, highly regarded clinical education programs in both Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, and a robust PhD program. All faculty teach undergraduate and graduate level courses within their discipline and area of expertise.
The UT Dallas Master of Science program in Speech-Language Pathology is one of the largest in the United States and is housed within state-of-art facilities located at the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders. The Callier Center houses clinical education suites and individual and core laboratories in addition to its comprehensive clinical facilities. Co-localization of clinical and research facilities with clinical education suites at the Callier Center enhances opportunities for clinical and translational research efforts. Callier Center clinicians evaluate and provide treatment to more than 4,000 children and adults, with more than 20,000 patient visits annually.
Clinical and translational research programs in speech, language, and hearing disciplines are additionally facilitated by the new UT Dallas Clinical Trial Unit housed at the Callier Clinical Research Center and access to the UT Dallas Sammons BrainHealth Imaging Center. SLH faculty have opportunities for vibrant interdisciplinary collaborations with UT Dallas Centers including the Center for Vital Longevity, Center for BrainHealth, Center for Children and Families, Texas Biomedical Device Center, and Center for Advanced Pain Studies, as well as the UT Dallas Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering programs and the UT Southwestern Medical Center.
The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing is housed within the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, also home to the Department of Psychology and Department of Neuroscience. Many faculty have affiliations with more than department and collaborations across departments are highly encouraged, including cross-listing of undergraduate and graduate seminars to facilitate multi-disciplinary student education.

| The undergraduate program in speech, language, and hearing science (SPAU) has historically provided in-depth preparation for enrollment in MS SLP programs across the country. Since reorganizing as the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing, there has been significant attention to the undergraduate curriculum to assure excellence in preparation of UTD students for enrollment in SLP MS, Doctor of Audiology, and doctoral research (PhD) degrees as well as employment as SLP Assistants or Audiology Assistants upon graduation – career tracks that have emerged only in the past 5 years. The state of Texas adopted new licensing code for Assistants to these professions in 2018 and UT Dallas is assuring undergraduates are prepared for employment in these positions on graduation. The long-standing reliance on part-time lecturers has always posed challenges for the administration of the SPAU program, but there are now urgent unmet teaching needs in the SPAU program with many Core (required) courses taught by part-time lecturers and many elective courses unable to be offered at this time due to faculty retirement or attrition (including but not limited to SPAU 3303 Normal Language Development, SPAU 3343 Phonetics, SPAU 3344 Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing, SPAU 3305 Language and Literacy Development, SPAU 4308 Language Disorders in Children, SPAU 4342 Assessment Procedures in SPAU, SPAU 3388 Clinical Observation, and SPAU 4394 Multicultural Aspects of Communication Disorders). The instructor will be assigned to teach required courses that are currently taught by part-time lecturers, elective courses that are unable to be offered at this time due to faculty retirement or attrition, and they will develop new courses that are envisioned as part of the new tracks within the SPAU major. The new Professor of Practice may be asked to provide supervision of undergraduate students enrolled in Clinical Practicum (SPAU 3390), and will serve on Program, Department, School, and University committees.
