The Opportunity:
The Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) Scholar and Project Coordinator position is located in the Center for Native American Research and Collaboration (CNRC), which is in the Office of Native American Programs within the Provost Unit. As the NSF RaMP Program Specialist, you will conduct TEK scholarship, outreach and communications, project management, and research and community support for the National Science Foundation Research and Mentoring for Post-baccalaureates in Biological Sciences (NFS RaMP) grant-funded project, entitled 'BioRISE: Biological Resilience for Indigenous Systems Empowerment.'
You will contribute TEK-informed perspectives to mentor trainings and other aspects of the project; foster respectful, reciprocal, relevant, and relational interactions among project participants and Indigenous peoples; maintain communication with the principal investigator, key project personnel. university mentors, trainees, partner Tribes, and Tribal mentors; assist the CNRC with trainee recruitment, through relevant departments in partner and other regional Tribes.
You will also work closely with the grant's fiscal manager to monitor the outreach portion of the budget, assist the PI and CNRC with administrative duties; facilitate matriculation and integration of trainees; set deadlines, assign responsibilities, monitor, and summarize progress of overall project for reports to NSF and Tribal partners; assist in compliance with university and Tribal research approval processes, maintain organization and ensure that the project clearly adheres to Tribal Nations' requirements for data sovereignty and inclusion of TEK and Traditional Ways of Knowing (TWK). As well as coordinate and contribute to trainings, workshops, and project events.
Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience including planning, policy analysis, coordination and consultation with a variety of public and private agencies, organizations, and/or levels of government OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field such as American Indian Studies/Native American Studies, Environmental Studies, Biology, etc..
  • Extensive Experience in communicating with Tribal Nations or Tribal stakeholder engagement.
  • Working knowledge of MS Software suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and other basic communications software.
  • Budget management experience
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge and/or Indigenous Research Methods.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in relevant field.
  • One year of experience participating in an NSF or similarly funded research project.
  • Experience in website management and digital communications.
  • Understanding of NW Tribal Treaty rights regarding 'usual and accustomed' places and practices.
  • Tribal Sovereignty, and Tribal Nation Building Principles.

Monthly Salary:
Range 53 | $4,602.00 - $6,198.00 (A-M) | Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

Temporary End Date:
This is a temporary position expected to end on May. 31, 2027.. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
