Summary of Duties:

The Northwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center (NW PTTC) Fellowship is a unique opportunity to participate in both state government work and work within prevention coalitions in communities in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) Region 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington). The Prevention Fellow will be hired and managed by Washington State University (WSU), and their daily duties will be co-managed in conjunction with Region 10 state agency supervisors.
The Fellow will spend one month (Phase 1) working with the NW PTTC team to learn about the PTTC network for workforce development. For Phase 2, fellows will move to a location within a Region 10 state for three months. 
Phase 2 is three months long and takes place working with the state agency. During this time, Fellows work alongside state staff and learn about and understand prevention science and how it is applied in the state and in local community coalitions.  Fellows shadow program managers as they coach communities in the development of their prevention plans, learning about applying evidence-based approaches at the community level. They also learn about key elements of community activated prevention.   
In Phase 3, Fellows spend three months in an existing substance misuse prevention coalition community, serving as a mentee under a current Prevention Coalition Coordinator. Importantly, Fellows learn the day-to-day operations of a substance misuse coalition. 
As need is identified, fellows will move into Phase 4 where they will work with a community that has been identified as having a high need for substance misuse prevention. In this final phase, they will spend three to four months collaborating with and assisting the community in coalition-building and readiness. 
This position will provide support to prevention providers, NW PTTC staff, and Region 10 state staff on contracts and statewide projects. This includes originating & developing formal education program and providing technical assistance to communities that are working towards wellness through Substance Use Disorder (SUD) prevention and Mental Health (MH) promotion. Learning and disseminating information about evidence-based prevention programs supported by prevention science research, with collaboration with WSU and UW researchers, Region 10 state prevention agencies, and community members; preparing applicable presentations and conferences. 


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Ability to travel and work a flexible schedule during the week

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills

  • Ability to travel extensively statewide.

  • Ability to work flexible work hours.

  • Proficient in MS Office products including Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skills and/or experience in providing training to culturally diverse audiences on prevention and health promotion topics.

  • Experience working with racial/ethnic and other historically marginalized communities.

  • Experience in contract management, communications, and social marketing practices.

  • Experience working or interning at a state, county or local level government agency.

  • Ability to design effective work processes to fulfill program/community goals and objectives.

  • Ability to find and interpret research related to community coalition building and substance use prevention

  • Ability to find community-level data and present data clearly to community members.

  • ·Ability to help community members identify and interpret data and train them to use data to conduct their own needs assessments.

Monthly Salary:

$4,000.00 | Commensurate upon qualifications and experience.
