Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical and managerial duties to support quantitative research on organ transplantation in mice and nonhuman primates at Dr. Stuart Knechtle’s lab in Duke Transplant Center. Assist researchers with experimental and logistical support. Perform laboratory tests and experiments, in particular, but not limited to: flow cytometry, ELISPOT, ELISA, Mixed Lymphocyte Reaction and qPCR.

Work Performed

Perform cell and molecular and biochemical laboratory techniques, such as flow cytometry, ELISPOT, ELISA, Mixed Lymphocyte Reaction and qPCR.

General laboratory maintenance including maintaining accurate, detailed records of chemical waste disposal, dishwashing and use of autoclave, etc.

Carry out studies involving mouse experiments including breeding, genotyping, and administrating drugs in mouse via IV, IP or gavaging and tissue and organ collection.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated. Knowledge of cell culture and cellular biology techniques. Willingness and ability to learn is essential.

Review scientific literature to remain current with new developments in relevant areas, including transplantation and nephrology.

Set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate standard laboratory equipment required for specific tests.

Prepare culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions. Assist in the development of new research procedures and techniques.

Maintain sufficient inventory of samples (tissues, frozen cells, etc.), materials, supplies and equipment; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

Review work of lower level laboratory personnel and assist in the training of new personnel.

Record and organize lab values (CBC, Chem, etc.) of nonhuman primates.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in biological sciences (biology, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, etc) or other directly related scientific field

Experience

Laboratory experiences in biology are required.
