DIHI Data Science and Innovation Internship

Job Description

The DIHI Data Science and Internship program is a training program for individuals with a strong quantitative background seeking experience in innovation, data science with healthcare applications.  The internship program is part of DIHI workforce development Initiative, a key component of DIHI and Duke’s mission in developing capacity in health and healthcare innovation to improve the healthcare locally and globally.

The healthcare innovation and data science internship program is structured to develop students currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs and interested in healthcare.  The program will provide them with an intense and supportive environment to develop essential skills in healthcare analytics and applied artificial intelligence/machine learning. The interns will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge data engineering, data science methods and healthcare data, while working in interdisciplinary innovation teams to develop solutions to healthcare problems. The intern will be mentored and work under the direction a DIHI core team lead, an individual with advanced expertise in healthcare innovation, data science.

Work Performed:

  • Support outcomes definition efforts for data science projects.
  • Develop the tools for cleaning and management of data needs for the innovation projects.
  • Manage and maintain a variety of data used in support of analytical and/or research projects.
  • Implement data quality assessment tools for the project.Prepare and maintain files for data.
  • Developing an analytic plan that accurately reflects the project objectives and properly accounts for the population, available data (including the data generating mechanism), data quality and cleanliness, and potential for bias
  • Work with a data engineering team member to define and create analytic dataset(s)
  • Performing data exploration and descriptive analyses.
  • Build statistical models to form the foundation of clinical / administrative decisions. Incorporate tools for monitoring the data quality and performance of models.
  • Support DIHI team members on data ETL and model efforts on ongoing initiatives.
  • Support the observed experimental data for discovery phase analysis.
  • Develop software, analyses and reports to support both production and development operations.
  • Manage non-production data flow.
  • Working with DIHI senior team staff on a variety of technical initiatives
  • Experimenting with different combinations of our existing technology to develop evidence based on hypotheses
  • Demonstrating technology proof-of-concepts (POCs) by assembling bits of technology in a virtual sandbox environment that will allow leadership to see a potential piece of technology working with our existing systems
  • Work against fixed timelines and success will be measured by the ability to deliver solutions matching the performance required for the clinical use cases.
  • Documenting project work with version control and regular project summary reports
  • Developing procedures, modules, and programs to generalize code into reusable resources, within and across projects.
  • Preparing work for transition to implementation and product development teams.
  • Prepare presentations highlighting progress and outcomes of projects.
  • Assist in developing training materials for use of solutions developed for deployment.
  • Participate and contribute as required in all team meetings.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Participate in the development of new opportunities.

Qualification: Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university. They must be available to participate in this internship program in person.
