`Non-Duke Paid Intern – DMPI-CFL Clinical Research

Occupational Summary

The Duke Molecular Physiology Institute (DMPI), a part of Duke University Medical Center, occupies a place of national and international leadership in the fight against major diseases.  Our mission is to produce integrated multi-omics and physiologic profiles of chronic human diseases, and to use such profiles to develop new disease detection strategies, novel therapies, and insights into disease mechanisms.

A full-time intern is needed to join a DMPI study team conducting human subject clinical research at the Duke Center for Living campus.  This Clinical Translation Research Division within the DMPI conducts studies enrolling healthy adults, individuals at risk for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases, as well as various clinical conditions.  This candidate will work closely with PIs and other members of a well-established clinical research team to support ongoing physiological studies involving muscle and fat biopsies, serial blood sampling, body composition analysis, strength assessments, cardiorespiratory fitness evaluations, and supervised exercise interventions.

Work Performed

This individual will support the day-to-day operations of clinical research studies conducted by Principal Investigators in the DMPI translational research division.  This position will maintain subject level documentation by conducting and documenting visits according to study protocol, relevant SOPs, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines as well as ensure documents, equipment, and supplies are prepared for research study visits.  In addition, this individual will incorporate strategies to maintain subject retention and recruitment rates while also assisting the study team in identifying problems with recruitment and retention.

Alongside clinical exercise physiologists, this position will assist in the implementation of supervised exercise intervention programs for clinical research trials.  This position will assist with data acquisition and documentation, perform associated data entry, monitor progress of participants throughout their exercise intervention to include personal motivation as well as assess participants’ tolerance of the intervention.

This individual will help ensure the accuracy and completeness of data and follow required processes, policies, and systems to ensure data security and provenance.

This individual will exhibit the interpersonal skills necessary to support the study team and get work done efficiently.  This position will participate in team meetings when indicated, assist the clinical research team in solving problems, and use effective communication to accomplish shared work objectives.  The individual in this position must be able to use the software necessary for study operations with little assistance.

Qualified candidates must be well-organized, conscientious, display critical thinking skills, possess strong interpersonal skills, and exhibit proficiency with basic Microsoft Office software.  The candidate must have an ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks appropriately to function successfully in a dynamic work environment.  The position requires a collaborative attitude and excellent communication skills to facilitate a strong team environment.  Job duties will involve, but not be limited to guiding study participants through their exercise program per protocol, conducting research assessments during subject study visits, maintaining proper participant-level documentation, processing/handling of research specimens, supporting subject retention efforts, and facilitating the general logistics associated with various clinical research studies.  Ideal candidates will have an educational degree or training related to nutrition and/or exercise science is ideal due to the nature of the trials typically conducted by this research operation.
