We are seeking several dynamic and creative Communications & Marketing Interns to join our team at the Pratt School of Engineering.

Based on the internship track and skillsets, the interns will assist in various internal and external communications and marketing projects for the school and departments, including social media, newsletters, design projects, multimedia projects, web design, and feature writing. The interns will be able to work with experienced professionals and gain hands-on experience in communications and outreach.

Key Responsibilities for Journalism and Public Relations Track Interns:

  • Collect and create content for the department's social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.) and create evergreen content.
  • Write quarterly awards and announcement round-up for smaller awards.
  • Attend and cover smaller events and symposiums to create quick social media/video posts.
  • Help to produce video and podcast projects, and support photo events/portrait sessions/collecting B-roll as needed.
  • Assist in tracking trends in university communications and identify ways to improve our communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with team members to create engaging and informative newsletter content.
  • Practice feature writing by choosing 1-2 big stories per internship period that could be featured in the department's magazine.

Key Responsibilities for Creative and Web Production Track Interns:

  • Understand and apply the Duke brand identity guidelines to create content and develop visual stories that embody the Duke look and feel.
  • Create mailing lists for faculty recruitment emails.
  • Facilitate updates of departmental email listservs.
  • Facilitate the maintenance of Web, Social Media, and Email Marketing analytics reports for stories and outreach efforts using tools like Google Analytics and Tableau.
  • Assist the multimedia producer, communications specialists, and creative team by researching and ideating on creative concepts and direction and designing storyboards to support the visual storytelling process through photos and video.
  • Assist the creative team on pre-production, production, and post-production of photo and video projects ranging from photo coverage for events, assisting with portrait photography sessions, and collection of b-roll.
  • Assist the creative and web team with web maintenance and tasks related to accessibility, compliance, and bug reports.
  • Assist the creative and web team with UI/UX tasks and testing.

Key Responsibilities for Graphic Design Track Interns:

  • Understand and apply the Duke brand identity guidelines to create content and develop visual stories that embody the Duke look and feel.
  • Assist the creative and content team in designing various graphic design assets using Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Canva, and Social Media tools.
    • Examples of projects include designing posters, postcards, digital ads, billboards, email campaign graphics, social media graphics, video assets, animations, and brochures.
  • Collaborate with the creative and content team to bring ideas to life, from research and concept development to execution and dissemination.
  • Work effectively independently and as part of a team to ensure good working relationships with the team and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Depending on the internship tracks and responsibilities, interns must be enrolled in a communications, design, journalism, marketing, IT, computer science, or related program at an accredited college or university.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Strong visual design or technical skills.
  • Strong project management skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Experience with content creation for various media types (written, video, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Comfortable with basic data analysis and creating reports in Google Analytics or Tableau.

This internship is ideal for a student passionate about graphic design, web design, communications, journalism, or marketing and looking to gain professional experience. The intern will be given real-world experience and have the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the field.
