Job Type: FullTime

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for multiple non-tenure-track teaching faculty positions beginning as soon as January 1, 2024.

Founded in 2019 and housed in the top five floors of an iconic 19-story building the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University (BU) is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit that augments and complements the traditional cognate disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, and statistics by laying the foundation for innovation-driven, civic-minded computing to maximize the real-world impact of its research, curricular, and co-curricular programs. Supporting its undergraduate and graduate degree programs, CDS has 52 core and affiliated faculty members who teach and pursue research at the nexus of data science and the landscape of disciplines at BU. Additional information is available at: https://www.bu.edu/cds .

Depending on qualifications and experience, successful candidates will be appointed either as lecturers or as clinical assistant or associate professors, carrying a teaching load of five courses per year primarily in support of CDS online programs with an option to also contribute to CDS residential programs. This teaching load may be reduced in the first year to allow for course development. Remote or hybrid work is possible for candidates appointed as lecturers to teach online courses exclusively.

Qualifications required of all applicants include experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

DO NOT APPLY THROUGH THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY HR WEBSITE.

Qualified candidates are invited to submit their applications through the web portal available at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/26551 . Application materials include current curriculum vitae, a statement summarizing online or in-person teaching and pedagogical innovation interests, an optional statement highlighting relevant preparation or experience in teaching or applied research, and at least three letters of reference.

Applications are welcome from recent PhD graduates, postdocs, or practitioners who are interested in an academic career focusing on innovation in online teaching and learning and on professional development of post-graduate students. Particular attention will be given to candidates with experience in topics that are relevant to data science, most notably mathematical and algorithmic foundation, software and data engineering, data mining, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence. Candidates from underrepresented groups and those who have a track record of broadening participation in computing and data science are encouraged to apply.

Boston University expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a diverse community, which is essential to its mission as expressed at https://www.bu.edu/info/about/diversity . BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud of our record, including being the first American university to award a PhD to a woman and the university from which Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD. CDS is dedicated to increasing participation of all talented students, especially women and other underrepresented groups in computing.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, natural or protective hairstyle, religion, sex, age, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, military service, pregnancy or pregnancy-related condition, or because of marital, parental, or veteran status. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.
