Georgia College & State University invites applications for the Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar. This is a one-semester visiting fellowship, which includes teaching, research, and educational outreach activities. A residency proposal, detailing the proposed activities, should be a part of the application. Applications are open for both Spring 2025 and Spring 2026; applicants should indicate whether they are applying for one or the other of these semesters or whether they wish to be considered for either semester.

The Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar Program was established in 2011 with an endowment from Georgia College & State University alumna Mrs. Martha Daniel Newell. The program promotes the Georgia College & State University liberal arts mission by bringing to campus eminent scholars from the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences, the disciplines at the heart of our liberal arts mission. The program provides exciting opportunities for the Georgia College & State University community to engage with nationally recognized senior scholars from distinguished institutions of higher learning with extensive records of excellence in research/ performance and teaching. Previous Newell Scholars have been hosted in Biological Sciences, Theatre, Psychology, Sociology, Music, History, and Art. Over the course of one semester, the Newell Visiting Scholar will engage in teaching, research, and educational outreach: (1) teach one course or seminar in an area of disciplinary expertise; (2) conduct a research project, ideally using local and/or regional resources; (3) engage in a program of educational outreach (e.g., guest lectures, campus lectures, and/or community engagement. A residency proposal should detail these three areas of activity, and how the residency initiatives benefit Georgia College students and faculty, and how they advance Georgia College's liberal arts mission.

Educational Requirements
A terminal degree in the Academic discipline field. A record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and public presentation. Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials)

Other Required Qualifications
Scholars teach one class of their own design and conduct a small number of related campus and/or community events (such as lectures, performances, or projects) over the course of the spring semester. The class and related events should inform and engage students and the campus community and reflect and promote Georgia College & State University's liberal arts mission and values.
A residency proposal should identify the goals and initiatives the scholar will bring to the Georgia College & State University campus community during residency. Interdisciplinary explorations and a rich variety of programming are welcomed.

Required Experience
A record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and public presentation.
