Job Title: Sanctuary Director Location: Lorrimer Sanctuary, Franklin Lakes, NJ Department: Education Reports to: Vice President of Education Job Classification: Full time regular (40 hours week), salaried, exempt, Housing Available Job Description: The Sanctuary Director is the administrator of the NJ Audubon mission and operations at the facility and associated grounds/sanctuary. The position has duties primarily in the education branch of NJ Audubon and is expected to maintain, grow, and promote center-based programming that reflects the NJ Audubon mission and meets the needs of our members, our community, and the region. The Sanctuary Director takes a leadership role in membership growth, donor cultivation, sanctuary stewardship and community outreach. The Sanctuary Director encourages and maintains an active, cooperative interface between staff, volunteers and interns involved in these programs and takes an active role in promoting NJ Audubon as a membership-based conservation organization. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership/Management • Develop and implement long-range strategic goals in support of NJ Audubon’s Conservation Priorities. • Oversee the operations of the center and all associated programs. • Hire, train, and supervise staff so that the work and mission of NJ Audubon are fulfilled and comply with all organizational and legal requirements for hiring and employment practices. • Work with VP of Finance to develop and monitor annual budget and finances for Lorrimer with a goal of aligning funding to priorities and achieving sustainability. • Oversee facilities maintenance, inspections and improvements including buildings, grounds and onsite equipment and ensure the safety and security of sanctuary property as required. • Manage an effective volunteer program according to NJ Audubon’s expectations. • Maintain ongoing coordination with NJ Audubon headquarters staff regarding programmatic, operational, and human resources policies and procedures. Education • Oversee, coordinate and/or provide natural history / environmental education to diverse audiences including schools and other special interest groups (scouts, birthday parties, teachers, etc.), summer camps, adult natural history/birding field trips • Work with VP of Education to develop / assess programs including programs for underserved populations. • Develop and disseminate annual calendar of events with NJ Audubon communications team. • Interact with other NJ Audubon staff to promote statewide education initiatives. Membership/Fundraising • Strive to increase membership base in cooperation with Development Department and other departments as appropriate. • Work with VP of Development to develop, implement and evaluate annual fundraising plan. • Act as the chief fundraising representative at the center and participate in collaborative fundraising efforts in accord with and upon the approval of the VP of Development. Member and Community Relations • Represent NJ Audubon in the local community, expanding the Organization’s presence to increase local awareness, support and participation, and maintain routine contact with town officials and representatives. • Work with the Communications Department to coordinate marketing and promotions of all programs including media, social media and community-outlets for Center programs. • Actively promote the Center’s programs by contacting new clients. Foster good relationships with our educational base including: schools, scouts, youth groups, and other student-oriented groups. • Maintain a welcoming space to effectively engage visitors. Facilities / Property • Oversee facilities maintenance, inspections and improvements including buildings, grounds and onsite equipment such as heating/cooling systems. • Ensure the safety, maintenance and security of sanctuary property as required. • Work with the VP of Stewardship to develop, implement and evaluate property stewardship plan. Other • Prepare written reports, memorandum of understandings, proposals and plans as required in cooperation with Center Administrative Team. • Attend department and NJ Audubon meetings and serve on department or Organization committees as requested by supervisor. • Participate with other New Jersey Audubon staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the assigned center and assume additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Qualifications/knowledge/skills • Degree in the sciences or education or relevant practical experience in a similar position. • Minimum three-years of experience in managing a nature center, supervising staff and coordinating volunteers. • Good natural history knowledge of NJ flora, fauna and habitats with a strong foundation in conservation science with the ability to inspire others to explore the natural world. • Demonstrated fundraising (including grant-writing and donor cultivation), budgeting and finance experience. • Strong computer (Microsoft Office 365) and Social Media Skills to fulfill the job requirements. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines. • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback. • Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed. • Must have own transportation and a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ, have the physical capacity to walk throughout the land and buildings of the sanctuary, be able to move materials and to lift 50 lbs. and operate mechanical equipment as needed. • Have or obtain and maintain certification for self and staff for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site including satisfactory background check.
