Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
ITS Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) manages the ITS data centers and provides around-the-clock support for ITS business computing activities. I&O also supports and maintains the infrastructure for network, data communications transport services, and campus desktop computers, and maintains the infrastructure for the operating systems for non-research ITS servers and for disaster recovery and business continuity activities for ITS. I&O also manages the enterprise-wide IT Service Management platform ServiceNow.
Position Summary
The ITS Communication Technologies Engineering and Operations organization has the primary responsibility for the planning, design, construction, implementation, operation, maintenance, customer management and support of the enterprise voice/data/video networks at UNC-Chapel Hill. These responsibilities include the direct operation, administration and maintenance of the campus duct/fiber/copper infrastructure; voice and video communication platforms, IP data transport copper/fiber infrastructure, engineering/operational standards and specifications development/oversight for network communications wiring and associated infrastructure; and ensuring new building and building renovation projects are constructed and maintained to meet campus standards and customer demand requirements.
This position reports to the ITS Transport Operations manager of Communications Technologies.
The primary purpose of this position will require the technician to install, terminate, and test fiber optic cable used in the campus data network. The technician will also be required to maintain and repair any and all issues that may arise with the fiber optic network by using an OTDR to determine where said issues are. Another requirement of the position will be to install, terminate, test and maintain the campus cable TV system from the headend to the faceplate. The technician will also be required to install, terminate, test and document LAN wiring, telephone wiring, and cable TV wiring per EIA/TIA and UNC standards. The technician will also be responsible for the installation and termination of CAT 6e data cabling, when needed. A good portion of the installation of the data cabling is completed above ceiling. Work in the telecom closets will be required to be done around live network equipment. The Network Technician must be able to work in office areas without creating very much dirt and debris. The technician must be able to use a cable analyzer to test for opens, shorts, NEXT,FEXT, and wire mapping. 
 
This position reports to the ITS Transport Operations manager of Communications Technologies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a 
- Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience such as network design, analysis or network management; or 
- Associate’s degree in Electronics or Networking Technology and one year of networking related experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience. 
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Basic experience with fiber optic cable and the color code. 
Able to identify the different types of communication cable (CAT 5e, 6, 6A, SM, MM, and telephone cabling). 
Identify color code for each cable and have a basic understanding of how to terminate each one. 
Able to identify a plenum rated environment versus a riser rated environment and be able to identify riser rated and/or plenum rated cabling and innerduct.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
BICSI training and certifications. Fiber optic certification from an accredited training group.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Candidates for employment must be able to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders of any kind, and work in enclosed spaces for lengthy periods of time. Must be able to work outside during anytime of the year.
