Scope of Job
Responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the University’s multi-campus networks, including support, problem resolution, installation, and alert follow up for network, telephone, and wireless networks.
Description of Duties
  • Installs and tests access layer network, telephone, and wireless equipment.
  • Configures access layer equipment based on existing standard configurations.
  • Performs basic troubleshooting, resolution, and escalates network, telephone, and wireless issues.
  • Upgrades access layer networks, telephone, and wireless equipment to latest stable firmware releases.
  • Participates in migrations, upgrades, basic configurations, and rollout of new or existing network, telephone and wireless hardware and software.
  • Stages, assembles, and prepares network, telephone, and wireless equipment for configuration and testing.
  • Prepares and maintains network documentation such as network, telephone, and wireless diagrams and cabling layouts.
  • Troubleshoots problems that will require cable repair, cable maintenance, and faultfinding.
  • Performs basic testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic and copper cabling.
  • Performs copper and fiber cabling installation and termination.
  • Assists in performing the scheduled maintenance and off hour testing of networks.
  • Assists in the backup and restoration of network, telephone, and wireless equipment configurations.
  • Provides routine maintenance on access layer network, telephone, and wireless equipment and infrastructure.
  • Assists in providing support for Call Center agents, softphones, desktop endpoints, and analog devices.
  • Initiates, reviews, and completes incident and service requests to move, change, install, repair, or remove voice and data communication equipment.
  • Participates on project and change tasks supporting network infrastructure and provides technical support as needed.
  • Participates in weekly trouble ticket support rotation and must be available on an “On call” basis.
  • Provides support to senior staff on network projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education
Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, or related field, or a comparable substitution of experience and education on a 1-for-1 basis.

Licenses/Certifications
Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification is preferred
Required Experience
Two (2) years of experience installing and supporting hardware, software and networking technologies, or a comparable substitution of experience and education on a 1-for-1 basis.

Equipment
Use of standard office equipment. Experience installing and supporting hardware, software and networking technologies. Experience with network/telephone/wireless trade tools.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Rotating shifts may be required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Knowledge of the practices, principles, and techniques of computer/telephone/wireless networks, local and wide area networks, of VoIP protocols and codecs, information systems (in general), computer software and hardware, and of information security policies and procedures. Competent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills. Good planning and organizational skills.
