Summary

The IT Security Associate is responsible for assessing and implementing security controls across the College's information technology environment, including but not limited to on-premise security systems, cloud security systems, security applications, network infrastructure, and affiliate communications. This person will be operationally responsible for the day to day activities related to the upkeep of the security environment.

 

The IT Security Associate supports the College in several security initiatives. This person will either lead or assist with many ongoing and new security projects. This person will help enforce security for Baylor College of Medicine using various tools. This person will utilize many security tools such as virtual private networks (VPN), firewalls, Intrusion Protection Systems (IPS), Network Access Control (NAC), network segmentation, SIEM logging, network monitoring (Solarwinds), and will periodically configure network switches to better secure the BCM environment.

Job Duties
  • The IT Security Associate works from a ticketing system queue toward the resolution of data security, voice, video, and networking-related issues.
  • Works closely with the OIT Security and Compliance team toward the implementation and maintenance of all data security-related infrastructure and policy.
  • Performs installation, repair, ongoing maintenance, and troubleshooting of Baylor's data security/network infrastructure, including intrusion detection/prevention systems, firewalls, vpn hardware, SIEM, application delivery systems, LAN, and WLAN located at the main campus, as well as throughout the Texas Medical Center and remote locations in the Houston metropolitan area.
  • Assists in the daily operation of the security-related modules of the application delivery controller environment.
  • Assists in the investigation and documentation of incidents involving, either directly or indirectly, the security and/or data infrastructure.
  • Maintains and documents information protection policies, procedures, processes, standards and guidelines to support various aspects of the Baylor information security program.
  • Provides ongoing assistance in addressing security issues and in implementing security policies and procedures, both internal and external to OIT. Works under guidance of senior staff to configure and implement high availability hardware according to industry best practices.
  • Assists in data security and networking projects of all sizes, specializing and leading in smaller to medium projects.
  • Conforms to BCM IP addressing scheme.
  • Provides escalation support for the Help Desk, Field Services, and Communications Services and Operations team.
  • Assists in the budgetary information for data security, voice, video, and networking projects.
  • Develops and provides supporting information for, and frequently writes and updates departmental documentation, including standards, processes, and procedures and topology drawings/maps.
  • Contributes to creating and the upkeep of departmental knowledge articles. i.e. "how-to" customer documentation.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation, including holidays (sick time and vacation time do not apply).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.  Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement. 
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field is preferred but not required
  • The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, be regarded as a team player, have strong and proven organizational skills, and have a personal drive to be their best
  • Prefer experience with NAC (ISE), Firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco, NSX, or Juniper)
  • Robust set of skills in implementing, operating, configuring, and troubleshooting a converged IP network
  • Intermediate knowledge of Cisco products/technologies
  • Ability to capture and decode/interpret packet traces, and to use them to troubleshoot complex issues 
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be customer service oriented, with the ability to work well with all levels of customers, staff, faculty and management 
  • Have an in depth understanding of security products such as NAC, firewalls, NSX, and securing wireless 
  • Have a good understanding of wireless technologies
  • Able to quickly identify problems and create meaningful solutions
  • Must be a team player, possess excellent organizational skills, and be creative
  • Proven leadership skills both project and technical based
