Job Description Summary

The Network Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for assisting in all aspects of network installation, design, administration, and maintenance and support of the University’s network technology infrastructure. Responsible for ensuring network equipment is operating correctly and assisting with all network work orders for the campus. Works under general supervision and reports to the Director of DevOps.


Job Description


DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Assists in support of LAN/WAN systems. 

  • Configures and maintains networked switches and routers. 


  • Assists in ongoing upgrade of existing network, including planning, design, and installation of new data and video cabling and equipment. 

  • Assists with network work orders for the campus network and center locations, including providing various network support services for the campus network & center networks, for faculty/staff/student systems. 

  • Evaluates new network hardware and software technologies for compatibility with the university’s data and video communications network systems. 

  • Installs new connections and maintains other connections on campus and center locations. 

  • General knowledge of Cisco and similar network infrastructure devices such routers, switches, wireless access points, and wireless controllers. 


  • Provide primary support for University Campus network infrastructure including cabling, conduit, and all terminations. 

  • Provide Primary support for Saint Leo’s Server room environment including the Data-Center-In-A-Row (DCIR), power, UPSs, air conditioning, and cabling. 

  • Primary Interface with vendors and Facilities Management during all the phases of building construction both on University campus and Saint Leo’s Centers and remote sites. 

  • Monitor DCIR and troubleshoot system failures, referring to vendor or technicians as appropriate.  

  • Prepares and maintains documentation of network configurations and cabling layouts. 


  • Provide and update all fiber and cable maps of University Campus. 

  • Provide support for the University’s Wireless Infrastructure utilizing Cisco Wireless controllers and access points. 

  • Work with Vendors as needed. 

  • Provide support outside normal working hours as needed. 

  • Will be required to work on projects from inception to finish. This includes planning, obtaining quotes, working with vendors and contractors, and working with project managers. 


  • Makes recommendations on equipment based on technical requirements. 

  • Perform other duties as directed by the Director of Infrastructure. 


 


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  


 


Knowledge:  


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field required from a regionally accredited institution. 

  • Certification with a networking focus preferred. 

  • Expert knowledge of all uses of low voltage fiber and cabling. 

  • Knowledge of telecommunication and networking. 


  • Knowledge of Cisco switches, Aps, and Liebert UPS devices. 

  • Works with Cisco Meraki equipment. Including switches, access points, and security devices. 

  • Knowledge of network analysis of both hardware and software. 

  • Knowledge of general network infrastructure and principals. 

  • Knowledge of configuration and maintenance of hardware and software for networked switches and routers  


 


Skills:  


 


  • Basic troubleshooting techniques. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.  


  • Multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently in resolution of issues. 

  • Understanding of LAN/WAN networking concepts. 

  • One (1) year of professional experience involving networking equipment and administration. 


 


 


Abilities:  


 


  • Ability to communicate technical topics in an understandable form. 

  • Ability to learn network design and management. 

  • Work outside normal working hours may be required. 


  • Ability to work in a team setting. 

  • Some traveling will be required. 

  • Create outage reports. 

  • Carrying/Lifting up to 30lbs of equipment. 

  • Climbing ladders 


  • Stooping/Kneeling or crouching/crawling.
