What we want

The demand for wireless services increases every year on the campus. How these devices connect is also evolving into other spectrums such as 5G. Your in-depth knowledge of 5G radios and technical leadership will result in the first enterprise-wide 5G network on campus.  Collaborating with other wireless engineers, you will provide technical oversight for the deployment and delivery of enterprise-wide wireless networks or projects and services.  You will also have an opportunity to mentor, train and develop others as well as serve as a chair or senior member of an information resource team.  If this job description appeals to you, we encourage you to apply to be considered for this great opportunity.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eight years of networking design experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with a diverse range of people.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering.
  • Experience designing/install/configuring large enterprise or university Wi-Fi networks. 
  • Experience in CBRS environments. 
  • Experience with 5G or 4G technologies. 
  • Experience working with research activities.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • CBRS CPI, and CWNP.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A deep understanding of wireless technologies with a focus on 5G. 
  • Designing/installing/configuring of 5G networks or 4G networks in a university or large enterprise environment. 
  • A deep understanding of licensed spectrum. 
  • A deep understanding of RF and optimization of RAN technologies. 

Responsibilities

  • Design Wi-Fi and 5G Networks and preform Wireless Network Upgrades - Oversees the design activities for enterprise-level wireless network projects including CBRS and 5G.  Approves wireless network design plans for campus and 5G technologies.

  • Network Testing and Security - Approves testing methods and plans used to certify complex wireless networking projects to required installation design standards.  In collaboration with the network security team, helps establish procedures for compliance with enterprise and state wireless network security regulations.

  • Problem Management - In collaboration with the field services and installation teams, establishes protocols and processes for problem management and support.  Continuously monitors effectiveness of established processes and protocols. 

  • Client/Vendor Consultation - Establishes standards for the development of plans for new 5G networks or upgrades of current Wi-Fi.  Oversees input from clients, systems administrators, contractors, and vendors to develop specifications and plans for enterprise-wide wireless and 5G networks.

  • Documentation - Establishes the standards and processes used to document wireless and 5G network engineering designs, plans, maps, methods, procedures, problems, and repairs.

  • New Technology Deployment and System Integration Testing - Establishes enterprise level standards for the implementation of new technology deployments and system integration testing for 5G networks.

  • Technology Planning and Evaluation - Oversees the enterprise’s process for the evaluation of new technologies in the 5G field.  Makes technical recommendations to the enterprise’s executive leadership.

  • Project Planning Support - Collaborates with project leaders and executive staff to develop work, plan and time schedules for projects including outlining phases and identifying personnel and computing equipment requirements.

  • Leadership - Participates in mentoring, training, and development of other employees. Develops specifications based on input from the enterprise’s stakeholders. Consults with and assist computing personnel, vendors and/or manufacturers’ representatives in resolving complex procedural, operational, and technical problems. Serves as a chair or senior member of an information resource team responsible for setting the enterprise’s technical standards and direction; and perform all or some of the duties of a Network Engineer III. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Professional Development - Participates in training and professional development sessions.
