Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) is a community of Information Technology professionals committed to delivering service and technological solutions in support of teaching, learning, research and administration. The Network Engineer reports to the Associate Director of Network Services and has primary responsibility of supporting the health of the University campus network and some project management, including leading smaller lifecycle upgrades or supporting larger engineering/architecture projects. Other responsibilities include;
- monitoring the network for performance issues,
- proactively recommending processes for Network as a Service (NaaS),
- write basic code of moderate complexity and maintain related documentation
- support technical solutions to deliver business requirements through automation
- preventive maintenance, documentation and all other level II troubleshooting
- must be able to clearly articulate technical matters to non-technical customers
Other responsibilities include:
- Participate fully in the build, configuration, and documentation of IT infrastructure
- Maintain and support IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to standards and service level objectives
- Monitor and troubleshoot IT infrastructure
- Analyze and report on performance metrics
- Implement and support robust and secure IT solutions
- Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external stakeholders
- Support and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
- Contribute to establishment of best practices
- Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills

- Solid background in network administration
- Familiarity with some of the following:
- OSI model, switching & routing technologies, Aruba/HP OS, ClearPass, Airwave wireless, Cisco IOS, Cisco ISE, FortiOS, Spanning Tree, OSPF, Wireshark packet analysis, DNS, & DHCP.
- access control models and network security is a plus
- Understanding of communication protocols and network operating systems
- Proven problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and quality-focused customer service orientation
- Experience with network diagnostic, monitoring, and analysis tools and remote network management tools and processes
- Good technical writing skills and strong interpersonal communications skills
- Ability to work independently
- Strong interpersonal communications skills and good technical writing skills
Certificates and Licenses
- N+, CCENT, or CCNA certification or equivalent Aruba certification is a plus.
- A driver’s license is needed to be able to move equipment around campus (a van is provided).
Physical Requirements
- Position requires continuous walking around campus and standing in confined spaces for extended time periods as well as the ability to lift 50lbs.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in;
- an office setting;
- Harvard’s networking closets, etc. are spread across a large campus with many buildings;
- Walking, carrying, using staircases, standing, and driving will be required in order to fulfill the needs of the position.
- Participates in 24x7x365 on-call rotation.
- Some off-hours work will be required as needed and other duties as assigned.

Work Format Details
HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. This position will be based in the Boston / Cambridge, MA area, and will require the incumbent to be onsite up to 5-days per week. Additional travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
