UAB Medicine Health Information System (UAB HSIS) is seeking a Network Architect – Enterprise Wi-Fi to design, implement, and optimize the Wi-Fi network infrastructure to meet the connectivity needs of the Hospital.  This role requires a deep understanding of Wi-Fi technologies, protocols, and security standards. The Wi-Fi Architect collaborates with network engineers, system administrators, etc. to ensure peak performance of wireless networks.

 

To develop strategies and direction for network systems solutions using current and emerging technologies. To translate business requirements into network and/or process designs. To plan and recommend network hardware, systems management software and architecture. To approve and modify network design and architecture to ensure compliance. To configure and maintain routers, switches, and hubs for the network systems (including wireless and VOIP). To evaluate and recommend new products and maintain knowledge of emerging technologies for application to the enterprise. To monitor network performance, ensure capacity planning is performed, and is proactive in assessing and making recommendations for improvement. To perform troubleshooting procedures and design resolution scripts. This position will commit to fostering an environment of heightened security following Information Technology Security Policies and participating in security training, such as Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), on an annual basis.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

·         Collaborate with IT Leadership and cross-functional IT Infrastructure teams to design, implement, and maintain the Hospital System Wi-Fi infrastructure.

·         Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for the Wi-Fi system, ensuring performance, compatibility, security, availability, and reliability.

·         Forecast and plan the strategic lifecycle of the Wi-Fi infrastructure to accommodate newer technologies, ensuring network capacity, coverage and scalability requirements are met.

·         Ensure backward compatibility and mitigate risks between older and newer Wi-Fi standards.

·         Manage the replacement lifecycle of Wi-Fi equipment to minimize service disruptions.

·         Oversee the management and troubleshooting of Wi-Fi performance and service issues.

·         Develop and maintain technical design documentation for Wi-Fi architecture, configurations, and procedures.

·         Provide expertise and leadership in supporting Wi-Fi network problem management.

·         Coordinate with specialized infrastructure teams and other functional groups to advance enterprise projects.

·         Serve as the final escalation point for Wi-Fi network troubleshooting and operational issues.

·         Assess near- and long-term network capacity needs in collaboration with leadership.

·         Assist in managing and maintaining existing network and peripherals as required.

·         Handle add moves and changes in the work queue.

·         Assist in configuring and installing Cisco equipment.

·         Provide after-hours on-call 24x7 support on a rotating weekly basis.

·         Ensure network connectivity of servers, workstations, telephony equipment, and other network appliances.

·         Practice network asset management, including maintaining inventory and related documentation.

·         Conduct feasibility studies for implementing new Wi-Fi technologies.

·         Work with Information Security to design and implement robust security measures for Wi-Fi networks, including encryption, authentication, and intrusion detection.

·         Manage and offer guidance to junior team members.

·         Perform other assigned tasks as needed.

 

Qualifications

 

Qualifications

·         Associate's degree in Information Systems or a related field and ten (10) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.

·         5+ years of hands-on architectural network level experience; Cisco Certified Network Professional Wireless (CCNP Wireless) or equivalent preferred. Expertise in networking, data center technologies, IP addressing, WAN connections, next-gen Wi-Fi technologies, and security fundamentals.

·         5+ years proven experience with Wi-Fi architecture design/support in a large hospital environment preferred. Hands-on experience in maintaining and performance tuning at scale for an enterprise Wi-Fi in a large hospital.

·         Experience with Cisco and Juniper Wi-Fi technologies, including Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs), and Juniper Mist; configuring and optimization.

·         Proven experience with Juniper, Cisco, Arista switching.

·         Solid understanding of Wi-Fi networks with strong knowledge of implementation best practices and methodologies to identify performance bottlenecks, single points of failure, and security risks.

·         Demonstrated in-depth expertise in understanding how Wi-Fi influences all aspects of network architecture, including data centers, access points, distribution systems, and core network equipment.

·         Capable of conceptualizing, designing, and executing solutions for upcoming projects and initiatives, leveraging expertise in emerging technologies and integration strategies.

·         Expanded knowledge of network routing and switching, including routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, and an in-depth understanding of LAN protocol Spanning Tree.

·         Hands-on experience with Wi-Fi technology, including installation of wireless access points, troubleshooting wireless technology problems, and configuration and documentation in wireless management systems.

·         Proficient in crafting advanced network security designs to enhance overall system integrity and resilience.

·         Analytical skills to analyze processes, gaps, resolutions, and share lessons learned.

·         Must be able to perform physical activities such as lifting heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking. Must be able to tolerate confined spaces.
