General Notes

This position is located in Port Aransas, TX. Only applicants authorized to work in the United States will be considered.


Purpose

This position is responsible for the coordination of the sea turtle nesting program for the Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) at the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve) at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port Aransas.  This is a temporary position from mid-March to the end of July to support the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nesting season.


Responsibilities

  • Lead daily nesting patrols, and supervise ARK volunteers along designated shoreline and beach areas

  • Schedule and coordinate volunteers to accompany daily patrols, including maintaining daily logs of volunteer patrol time and effort

  • Communicate with volunteers on a regular basis to organize/confirm patrol assignments and ARK needs related to nesting

  • Organize and maintain all nesting equipment including UTV vehicles

  • Manage budgets and order supplies related to nesting efforts

  • Develop outreach printed materials, and conduct outreach and community programming at events related to ARK nesting program

  • Follow establish Texas-state nesting protocols and develop an ARK-specific SOP

  • Assist with permit reporting and recordkeeping, including all required forms and photographs; Must uploaded to appropriate databases at the end of each nesting day

  • Communicate nesting data and issues to supervisor in a timely manner

  • Attend the USFWS and PAIS required annual nesting and stranding training including turtle documentation, nesting work, tagging, biopsy, and completion of required forms

  • Required to wear ARK/MANERR/UTMSI shirts and appropriate clothing

  • Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological, physical, or environmental sciences

  • Experience coordinating the activities of volunteers

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Experience with sea turtle nesting and stranding patrols

  • Experience with public facing and outreach programming

  • Familiarity with common MS Office suite

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of marine and estuarine ecology

  • Experience with detection of sea turtle tracks, nests, and collection and transportation of eggs and documentation of adult sea turtles at nest sites along the Texas Gulf Coast

  • Knowledge of UTV maintenance and repairs

  • Knowledge of state and federal permits


Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).


Salary Range

$36,000/annually + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

Availability to work 30 hours/week; You will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work
