Job Description

The Program for Narrative and Emerging Media (NEM) is a best-in-class research, teaching and gathering venue, with a focus on diversifying the demographics of who gets to create and distribute narratives using emerging media technologies in the areas of arts, culture and nonfiction. The program is a collaborative effort between The Sidney Poitier New American Film School housed in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication

The NEM Learning Technology Specialist supports the teaching faculty with the software and technical needs required to deliver classes, and works with students to assist in the delivery of their immersive projects. The successful candidate will have experience in game engine development (Unity and Unreal) with a working knowledge of 3D modeling software, 360 filming and editing, AR development and immersive sound; and stay up-to-date with new developments in immersive technology including virtual production, advising the NEM Director and Faculty of any significant changes or requirements needed to maintain ASU’s role as a best-in-class immersive narrative and production university.  The NEM Learning Technology Specialist will also have primary responsibility for coordinating with ASU’s University Technology Office in Los Angeles for setting up, operating and maintaining equipment, software and technology required for running all NEM programs. The NEM Learning Technology Specialist is encouraged to pursue their own creative activity, while involving students to give them the opportunity for hands-on experience in the production process.

Essential Duties

  • Set up, maintain and operate all equipment, software and technology required for NEM programing and events. 
  • Support students with the technical aspects of practical immersive projects. 
  • Coordinate with IT staff to ensure that the emerging media labs have correct software and hardware needed for technical teaching. 
  • Ensure that all labs/studios have equipment and software set up ahead of NEM classes, and properly store and maintain equipment after use. 
  • Support NEM professors with any technical preparations, requests or issues ahead of classes. 
  • Work with other ASU technology departments and ASU’s University Technology office, Los Angeles staff to set up systems for students to borrow NEM equipment. 

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in Technology, Instructional Design, Communications, or closely related AND two (2) years web content, graphic design or electronic publishing; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Masters degree in computer science or related field plus a minimum of two years relevant experience, or bachelors degree in computer science or related field and three years minimum experience. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the spectrum of immersive technology and skill to explore and experiment with the latest developments in the immersive tech field. 
  • Experience as a generalist in Unity, Unreal and working knowledge of 3D modeling software. 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of 360 cameras & editing software (Premier Pro for 360 & stitching). 
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of 3D capture techniques and Augmented Reality production. 
  • Knowledge of software and equipment for immersive sound. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of virtual production work flows. 
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, and successful experience in supporting faculty, staff and students. 
  • Experience working independently to ensure deadlines are met. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.  

Working Environment

The NEM Learning Technology Specialist will work primarily in the ASU California Center (Herald Examiner Building) in downtown Los Angeles, California.
Light travel schedule to the ASU Tempe campus and the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center may also be required.

Flexible work options

  • Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
  • Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
