This position will serve as a 4-H After-School Educator, 4-H and Community Nature-Based Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Broome County. This incumbent will provide comprehensive 4-H youth development opportunities for youth grades 2-5 in the Binghamton City School District, implement existing Nature-Based programming, education and activities for adults and children on birds, mammals, insects, trees, pond studies as well as other Nature-Based programing that aligns with the Nature-Based Plan of Work. This position will provide instruction using established 4-H curriculum in environmental science and natural resources, science, technology, engineering/environment, art/agriculture and math (STEAM). The position will utilize a variety of delivery methods to provide research-based information, programming development of lesson plans, and activities including direct teaching, field programs/tours, workshops, mass media, newsletters, and online. This position will interact with the public through program delivery initiatives, community outreach activities, and partnerships. This position will refer questions to appropriate specialists within Cornell Cooperative Extension, regional specialists, the state-wide Extension System, or to other agencies as appropriate. Under the direction of the RootED After-School Supervisor and Environment Program Lead, this position will work with community members, students, school staff, related service providers, non-profit entities, and municipalities to support both RootED after-school STEAM and nature-based education. This position will also coordinate administrative aspects of the Nature-Based Education Program and will assist the Environment Program Lead with marketing and fundraising efforts for 4-H and Community Nature-Based Education Programming.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, 37.5 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $22.47. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (High School Diploma/GED and one (1) year of transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity with education, ecology, animal science, natural resources, agriculture, youth and or human development highly preferred.
  • Experience with 4-H Youth Development education in Cooperative Extension or other youth development organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, teach and evaluate informal educational programs through a variety of delivery methods to reach individuals and groups; adults and youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member working with volunteers and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize reference materials for programming purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery - 80%

  • Work to foster acceptance of the 4-H Youth Development program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.
  • Utilizing already-established materials, serve as subject matter resource in the 4-H Youth Development areas, and provide standard responses.
  • Assist in the creation of lesson plans to deliver educational programs. Delivery methods include, but are not limited to: direct teaching, field programs/tours, workshops, newsletters, and online.
  • Teach a menu of existing educational programs and activities as defined in support of 4-H after-school programming efforts including, but not limited to: science, technology, engineering/environment, arts/agriculture and math (STEAM)
  • Via established program parameters, communicate and cooperate with school personnel to foster intentional instruction and to address the needs and interests of participating youth.
  • Provide summer opportunities for the afterschool site, as well as participate in Cornell Cooperative Extension camps and activities.
  • Assist in providing established 4-H Youth Development educational programs via mass media.
  • Teach existing 4-H Youth Development programming and community programming to include but not limited to: nature and the environment.
  • Teach already-established 4-H Youth Development educational programing and activities in support of other 4-H Youth Development programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established 4-H Youth Development Program Area’s Plan of Work.
  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and 4-H Youth Development Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

Program Evaluation - 5%

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.
  • Assist in the interaction with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include: evaluating effectiveness of all 4-H Youth Development programs.
  • Assist in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, make recommendations for improvements in program offerings.
  • Assist in the communication of evaluation findings to constituents as appropriate.



Administrative Responsibilities:

Management - 5%

  • Give established guidance to volunteers and staff, including those performing similar work, as appropriate.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality of information and data collected.
  • Maintain record of class participants and complete reports as required by programs funders.
  • Under the direction of the Supervisor coordinate and assist with projects and outreach efforts as instructed.
  • Compile, edit and format existing program resources and program materials.
  • Compile, tally and format evaluation data from program participants based on existing framework.
  • Provide input to Supervisor for program budget preparation and submit program expense reports.
  • Provide administrative support for fund development activities as identified.
  • Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.
  • Organize and coordinate activities related to 4-H Youth Development Programming (i.e. nature and the environment, youth development).
  • Assist in coordination of volunteers to extend program implementation efforts.
  • Effectively communicate with parents of school districts as needed to achieve program goals.
  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in required trainings.
