Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary
A Natural Resources Specialist (Permanent, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Colorado State University’s (CSU) main campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. This position will provide essential support on a growing team of specialists in ecology, biology, environmental compliance, and environmental document production.
The Natural Resources Specialist will provide technical expertise and support for a variety of natural resources projects including (but not limited to): desert thrasher surveys, bat monitoring (acoustic and emergence counts), Avian Protection Plans, bird habitat assessments, and long-term vegetation surveys. Other duties of this position may include the development and review of regulatory compliance documents including Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans (INRMPs), National Environmental Policy Act analyses, wetland reports, biological assessments, fieldwork reports, and other natural resources-related documents; preparing climate change documents; and preparing outreach materials for a variety of natural resources programs. Fieldwork and associated data management will account for a large portion of this position, therefore, meticulous attention to detail, particularly in adverse environmental conditions (hot and dry, cold and wet) are required. Additionally, excellent scientific synthesis, writing, and communication skills also are required.

Required Job Qualifications
  • M.S. in Natural Resources, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, or a different natural resources-related field OR a B.S. in one of those fields plus at least three years of professional experience.
  • At least one year of experience leading natural resources field efforts and performing ecological surveys targeting wildlife and/or vegetation.
  • At least one year of experience collecting/managing field data and synthesizing data into reports.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing natural resources planning documents.
  • Knowledge of natural resource-related Department of Defense Instructions (DoDI) and Air Force Manuals (AFMAN) (e.g. DoDI 4715.03, AFMAN 32-7003).
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Proficiency with ESRI products (e.g. ArcMap, ArcPro, AGOL).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • At least one year of professional experience with natural resource management on military lands.
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys targeting bats and birds.
  • Experience surveying electrical utilities for integration into Avian Protection Plans.
  • Experience preparing outreach materials for natural resources programs.
  • Experience using ESRI products for data collection (Survey123, ArcCollector, Field Maps)
  • Professional experience developing and updating INRMPs.
  • Professional experience reviewing climate change models and assessments and developing adaptive strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change.
