The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for a Human-Wildlife Conflict Biologist in Clackamas, Oregon to help monitor and manage wildlife populations and address human-wildlife conflicts. To learn more about the department and the work we do, view the following video at https://myodfw.com/about What you will do: • Receives and responds to wildlife damage complaints and reports of human-wildlife conflict. Records information on wildlife damage complaints and evaluates type and severity of damage. Provides advice to individuals to reduce or solve damage. Provides non-lethal deterrents and issues haze or kill permits as necessary. Issues special hunting tags to landowners. Responds to reports of sick, injured, or nuisance wildlife or wildlife creating a public safety hazard. • Assists with the timely completion of biological surveys on various species of wildlife within the district. Duties are shared with all biologists. Information obtained is used in management decisions (hunting seasons regulations, habitat manipulation, relocation of animals, identification of other needs). Conducts elk population composition assessments from helicopter observations in the winter and spring. Characterizes deer population characteristics from spotlight routes in the winter and spring. Assesses upland bird production by conducting roadside counts, trapping, identifying, and banding birds. Evaluates band-tail pigeon population trends at mineral springs during the summer. • Assists with the district’s conservation strategy program. Participates in monitoring of conservation strategy species. Coordinates with department conservation biologist on cooperative projects with federal and private entities. Assesses potential impacts to special status and sensitive nongame species of proposed development activities. Provides suggestions for mitigation measures. Coordinates these comments with Wildlife Division and other staff. Updates computer data base on presence and absence of non-game species in Multnomah, Clackamas, Marion, Polk, Washington, and Columbia Counties. Qualifications
We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience: Minimum Qualifications: • Two years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included one year of at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework; or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program; OR • One year of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program that included at least two of the following: gathering data, analyzing data, or preparing reports, and a Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences; OR • A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences. Applicants who have obtained a Master's degree or Doctorate that included work experience from an internship, work/study, thesis, or similar program may list this experience in their application to receive credit for the work experience. The Master's degree/Doctorate and applicable work experience will be considered separately and both the education and applicable experience may count toward minimum qualifications. Requested Skills: • Experience with population monitoring and census techniques • Experience with addressing human-wildlife conflict • Experience coordinating with outside organizations including NGOs, tribes, state and federal agencies • Experience with animal capture and handling • Experience conducting outreach/education and giving oral or written presentations • Experience collecting biological samples and/or conducting necropsies
