Native Student Services Indigenous Peer Mentors

The Native Student Services (NSS) Indigenous Peer Mentors are expected to provide
support for Indigenous students’ at UAA through peer mentoring to increase academic
and social wellbeing. Mentors will be planning and hosting workshops and events with
the NSS Mentor Supervisor, providing relevant resources and information to mentees,
and building good relationships with Indigenous students.

Mentors main goals are to empower Indigenous students to show up as their whole
selves, build community relationships and rapport, support students academically,
socially, culturally, and emotionally, be an additional source of information, provide
studying/learning opportunities, and have fun by planning and attending mentorship
events. The student worker will serve as a positive role model and an active team
player in establishing an atmosphere conducive to academic success and fostering a
sense of belonging and community for Native Students.

● Excellent listening and spoken communication skills
● Must enjoy working with the students, be pleasant and diplomatic, and effectively
communicate directions clearly to other students.
● Maintain confidentiality
● Responsible for maintaining work hours.
● Ability to follow instructions, work independently, exercise sound and independent
judgment.
● Proficient computer knowledge
● Knowledge of event planning and logistics is helpful
● Knowledge of key issues that affect students including an understanding of
issues related to shared living, accommodation, academic, finance and wellbeing
● Experience of working independently
● Experience of dealing with difficult, sensitive or unexpected situations

● Ability to initiate contact with other students in a confident manner
● Approachable, personable, empathetic
● Self-motivated and self-reliant Uses own initiative to solve problems
● Awareness of own limitations and boundaries

Minimum Qualifications:

The Mentor must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google
Drive/Documents, Blackboard, & UAOnline. Knowledge of Alaska Native cultures is
required.

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UA campus in Anchorage.  This is a part-time, Student Assistant 2 position, paying $13.82/hour, working up to 5.5 hours per week.
