The Nonproliferation and National Security Department seeks an early career professional with knowledge of international safeguards, nonproliferation, and/or national security who can assist the Department with projects related to arms control and international safeguards.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Group Leader for Nonproliferation Policy and Implementation and other Department Leaders to assist senior employees in the implementation of ongoing projects. The individual may also assist in hosting student visits and university outreach, contribute to ongoing projects in data science and engineering development, participate in equipment testing projects, and support general Department activities. The individual will also be given the opportunity to attend BNL lectures, conferences and training related to arms control, international nuclear safeguards, and nuclear security to develop an understanding of the field. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provide support to international safeguards and nuclear security projects through research, writing, and other tasks as assigned.

* Attend project meetings and contribute to progress reports and presentations to sponsors.

* Assist with outreach to students, in particular promoting awareness of nonproliferation and national security career opportunities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, International Affairs, Political Science, or related field

* Knowledge of U.S. domestic and international policies related to safeguards and/or security for nuclear or radiological materials.

* Clear and concise oral and written communication skills

* Presentation skills

* Proficiency with Word and Excel, Internet browsers, Adobe Acrobat, and e-conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams, WebEx)

* Ability to work independently in an office environment.

* Knowledge of basic international nuclear nonproliferation, national security, and related technologies

* Interest in contributing to scientific endeavors and publications.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Master's Degree in Science, Engineering, International Affairs, or Political Science

* Three years of related experience

* Knowledge of a foreign language (United Nations languages preferred)

* Experience managing small to medium projects (2-3 team members)

* Familiarity with relevant international treaties and organizations, particularly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

* Experience writing project proposals, prospectuses.

Candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on breadth and depth of knowledge.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

The proposed work will take place in an office environment as well as in the laboratories of BNL scientists and engineers. The ability to conduct oneself safely in BNL laboratories by understanding safety information sheets, use personal protective equipment, and follow prescribed procedures and protocols and to advise visitors of required protective equipment upon entering laboratories is desired.

OTHER INFORMATION:

* The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

* Appointment level will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

* Must be willing and able to travel alone or with other Department representatives to attend meetings with U.S. government representatives or at other national laboratories.

* This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid/ telework) at the discretion of the manager/ department chair.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $69000 - $99917 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
