CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary
The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at CSU is seeking applicants to work with the National Park Service (NPS), Inventory and Monitoring Division, Rocky Mountain Network (ROMN) as a Non-Student Hourly. This position will assist with collecting field data and managing data for long-term ecological monitoring at three national park units in Colorado. The position will work a full-time schedule for up to 9 months. For June through August, this position works 10-hour days, for up to 8 days in row while traveling to national park units. During other times of the year, this position works in an office setting assisting with data entry and quality control.

Work will occur in Rocky Mountain National Park, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and in an office setting in Fort Collins, CO. The incumbent will travel to parks in a government vehicle with 1-3 other field crew members and sleep in a tent while in travel status. There may be one backcountry camping trip (backpacking) involving a ~2 mile hike in; all other camping will be front country car camping. Field work is completed as 10-hour days and at high elevations, potentially in difficult weather conditions. This position works 10-hour days, for up to 8 days in row, and requires frequent travel to national park units within Colorado. Trips will start and finish from and some office work will occur at the office location at 1201 Oakridge Drive in south Fort Collins. Colorado State University conducts background checks on all final candidates, and NPS will conduct a federal background check. A tentative position offer is contingent upon passing both background check processes.
The incumbent will receive training and experience by assisting with a range of scientific fieldwork and data management tasks in support of long-term ecological inventory and monitoring efforts at the ROMN. The position will work closely with the ROMN staff who are experienced with field data collection and data entry. Hiring of this position will begin immediately and requires a federal background investigation and favorable adjudication prior to starting. Anticipated start date is late May or early June 2023. Duration of the position is expected to last approximately 9 months. Actual length of service will depend on specific technical needs of the office, funding, and applicant performance. Official administration of the position will be from CEMML, but the position will report directly to the NPS ROMN Program Manager for oversight.

Position Minimum Qualifications
• Experience collecting ecological data on plants, streams/wetlands, and/or soils.
• A strong botanical background.
• Experience recording ecological data on paper data sheets and entering data into electronic databases (for example, Excel, Access, or SQL Server).
• Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day carrying a heavy (40-50-lbs) backpack. Ability to hike off trail, in extremely hot or cold weather, at high elevations (up to 12,000 ft), through thick vegetation, and wading in fast moving streams.
• Ability to complete a 3-day backpacking trip at high elevation.
• Ability to work closely with a team for up to 8 days at a time, including communication and conflict resolution skills.
• Must be self -motivated and have a high attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience identifying Rocky Mountain (or similar) vegetation

• Sampling water chemistry and groundwater levels.
• Accurately identifying vegetation to the species level and collecting data on vegetation composition, cover, and structure.

• Using ArcGIS Fieldmaps, and/or topographic maps, compasses, aerial photographs and GPS units to locate establish and relocate monitoring sites.
• Reviewing datasheets to ensure the quality of data collection.
• Entering data and following quality assurance procedures to ensure accurate data transcription into established databases.
