Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to work with a diverse group of colleagues in providing academic learning support, in the form of tutoring, to NASNT (Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institution) participants from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Assists students in learning and understanding course material within the tutor’s content area, with the goal of helping the student to become an independent and self-reliant learner.

  • Tutors individual students in the Native American center, or in another area designated by the tutor’s supervisor.

  • Tutors small groups of students in the Native American enter, or in another area designated by the tutor’s supervisor.

  • Attends College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA), National Tutoring Association (NTA), and other appropriate trainings.

  • Communicates respectfully, professionally, and promptly with visitors including students, community members, faculty and staff.

  • Improves in employee skills and tutoring skills (both content and effective tutoring).

  • Refers students to appropriate services on campus.

  • Tracks and submits work time, time spent in training, time spent tutoring, and tutoring session notes.

  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Advanced knowledge of discipline as demonstrated by: Associate’s degree or higher level of education; or specific certification essential for the job; or equivalent/specialized experience, such as language fluency/proficiency, at an academic level; successful completion of courses in the discipline with a grade of “B” or higher in combination with two (2) professional letters of recommendation from faculty or previous employer.

  • Communication skills in terms of providing students with academic tutoring assistance.

  • Customer service skills.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment.

  • Skill in operating a computer including the Microsoft Office suite and Internet browsing software.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions which may require some judgment. The supervisor spot-checks work while it is being performed and once completed for compliance with established procedures as well as, accuracy, nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

The Guidelines include NASNTI and Native American Center Policies, CRLA policies, FERPA, San Juan College Employee Handbook, ADA regulations, and other college and program policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment and selection.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of tutoring and other customer service duties that involve related steps, processes, or methods. The diversity in “customer base” (students) and range of each subject complicates the work performed.

  • The purpose of this position is to work with a diverse group of colleagues in providing academic learning support, in the form of tutoring, to students from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, and stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.

  • The work is typically performed in an office.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship.

  • Must have earned a grade of “A” or “B” in class tutored or more advanced class, recommendation from instructor(s), or multiple years’ experience in teaching or tutoring in the subject area.
