Nanofabrication Process Engineer - The Claire and John Bertucci Nanotechnology Laboratory

The Claire and John Bertucci Nanotechnology Laboratory, a premier research facility in Western Pennsylvania and the “Tech-Belt” (PA-OH-WV) region, has an immediate opening for a Nanofabrication Process Engineer on our Pittsburgh, PA campus.

The Nanofabrication Process Engineer is a hands on role working with the lab’s Executive Director in the area of micro/nano-fabrication processing.  Responsibilities will require experience with a variety of fabrication techniques and equipment, examples of which include lithography (electron-beam and photo), thin-film deposition (sputtering, evaporation, ALD, CVD, PECVD, etc.), wet and dry etching (especially plasma and ion beam etching), annealing, metrology, and more.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Train researchers on lab procedures, lab safety, chemical handling, fabrication processes, and equipment operation

  • Conduct fee-for-service process requests from customers

  • Assist researchers and other staff members in process related troubleshooting, development of new processes, equipment and process calibration, qualification of new equipment, documentation of processes and tool performance, documentation of lab procedures, and ongoing management of a process database

  • Basic administrative work that includes, accounting, billing, and invoicing; ordering of chemicals, materials, parts, and supplies; and creation, distribution, and processing of lab forms and log sheets

  • You may be required to work with the lab Equipment Manager and Technicians on repair, maintenance, modification, and/or the upgrade or development of various tools in the lab

Ideal candidates will have validated experience working in micro/nanofabrication at an academic, industrial, or government cleanroom facility; experience in process development and troubleshooting; data analysis, CAD software, and device design experience. Additional experience in working with cleanroom process equipment, including operation, optimization, and calibration of tools for sputtering, evaporation, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, plasma etching, ion beam etching, photolithography, electron beam lithography, scanning electron microscopy, annealing, metrology, and device/film characterization is preferred.

This position does require the use of hazardous chemicals and gases in a cleanroom setting, so candidates should have experience in handling such materials and be comfortable working in such an environment wearing cleanroom attire and appropriate personal protective equipment.
