Music Librarian

Princeton University seeks a dynamic and user-oriented expert in music to provide strategic direction for the Mendel Music Library. This position is subject specialist and liaison to faculty, researchers, and students in Princeton's Department of Music and Program in Musical Performance, to the Lewis Center for the Arts Programs in Dance, Theater, and Musical Theater, and to faculty and students at Princeton whose interdisciplinary teaching and research includes music or performing arts. This position supervises and collaborates with the Mendel Library Operations Manager who in turn manages the branch, its two staff and many student assistants. 

Responsibilities: Maintain a liaison relationship with the Music Department and Lewis Center faculty. Prioritize and shape collections, including primary materials and ephemera for general and special collections, and engage globally to identify and acquire these materials. Collaborate with humanities and area studies librarians, focusing on interdisciplinary study and new curriculum directions. Advance and promote the Mendel Music Library, its services, and collections by collaborating with the Operations Manager and staff to enhance the Mendel Library website and related social media. Facilitate discovery through participation in inter-institutional initiatives for coordinated collection development and resource sharing with ReCAP and IPLC partners, and democratizing access through digitization. Contribute to University and Library initiatives through leadership and participation on working groups. Represent Princeton in relevant professional and scholarly organizations. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in collections and with outreach to research populations at Princeton and beyond.

Required Qualifications: Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in musicology, music composition or performing arts. ALA accredited MLS/MLIS in library/information science or degree in progress; or 3 years of equivalent full-time professional experience working in an academic or research library. In-depth knowledge of music resources and tools. Proficiency in English and reading knowledge of French, German, and/or Italian. Familiarity with music collection development at the University research level. Experience providing in-depth reference consultations, and teaching or library instruction. Knowledge of traditional and emerging approaches to research and teaching in music. Familiarity with trends and development of technology in music and music librarianship and current thinking about AI in the music community. Familiarity with trends in music publishing, scholarly communications, and intellectual property. Successful liaison experience working with faculty, and students at all levels. Expert ability to communicate, collaborate and work effectively with culturally diverse patrons, scholars, and colleagues. Affinity for leadership, teamwork, productivity, and creativity while being flexible and resourceful in a fast-paced and service-oriented environment.
