Museum Specialist

Qualifications:
Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience in conservation and/or museum collections management OR MA/MS Degree in Museum Studies, Art Conservations, Archaeology, Anthropology, or similar
Experience with professional museum conservation treatment work and supporting written and photographic documentation Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel Duties:
Provide guidance in assessing treatment needs, writing treatment plans and addressing, as needed, questions during conservation treatment. Treatment plans or proposals will be reviewed and approved by the Supervisory Collections Manager (Museum Custodial Officer) and will be conducted by park staff. Treatments will be recorded, and documentation transferred to the Museum Registrar or alternate Receiving Officer as part of the object catalog record file.
Eureka Car Stabilization ? review and provide guidance on relocation and treatment plans for the cars related to their relocation off the ferryboat Eureka and storage in the San Leandro warehouse; including, as needed, various material treatments, engine fluids, turning of engine; lubrication of mechanical components; car covers and powder post beetle (see below). 20% Ship Model Case Ventilation ? develop an action plan for addressing acidic air in various, mostly ship model, exhibit cases which is causing degradation of materials such as lead parts. Treatments will be by in-house staff. 20% Conservation Treatment Program ? assist in establishing parameters for an in-park pest treatment program. Such a program would include defining desired capabilities, recommending equipment, and establishing a work area. 20% Mentoring ? via Conservation Group and personal contact, mentor staff on conservation issues, in particular, related to the maritime environment. Timing pending hire of new Museum Specialist. 20% Other projects could include creating treatment plans for beetle-infested artifacts and artifacts on display; provide guidance on stabilization proposal especially for Sea Fox wheelhouse; assessing new acquisitions for preventative conservation needs 10% Attend meetings and provide guidance to the Conservation team and assist staff in troubleshooting issues that arise during treatment activities 10%
Other: Travel Requirements: Occasional day trips to the park Physical requirements: Sitting at a computer for data entry, walking and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 lbs., reaching above head for objects stored on shelves. Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
