Department Purpose
The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art is dedicated to education and serves a primary audience of faculty and students as the lens through which it engages a broader audience. The museum's program is steeped in the richness of resources at UC Davis (a top 5 public university in the US), which is also the repository of an important art historical legacy; and its physical location in the Central Valley.
Department Specific Job Scope:
The incumbent must be an experienced manager with a track record of innovative work with students and faculty.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Founding Director, and as a member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Museum Education and University Engagement fulfills the critical role of connecting the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art (MSM) to the diverse campus communities that constitute the University of California, Davis. With 30% of our space allocated for educational activities, and developed with the vision of 'education out front,' education is central to MSM's purpose. This is a special opportunity for a leader ready to stake a national claim by elevating already successful educational programs.
The Director of Museum Education and University Engagement assures that the Manetti Shrem Museum delivers on our mission to inspire new thinking and the open exchange of ideas by connecting to faculty teaching and research as well as directing a portfolio of programs designed to advance students' understanding of their place in the world. The Director manages operation of the museum's lecture hall and wet studio by facilitating campus connections to create a lively forum for community engagement and creative practice.
Looking towards our 10th anniversary in November 2026, the Director of Museum Education will join MSM at an extraordinary moment. With robust faculty engagement, operational norms established, and an effective, collaborative team in place, the education department's track record of success positions our museum to become a national leader among university art museums. The Director of Museum Education will play a foundational role in setting institutional goals with which we will mark our 10th anniversary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Flexible work schedule; requires on-site oversight of key events and programs.

  • Work occasional overtime, varied lunch hours, evenings/nights, weekends and holidays as needed, occasionally on short-notice to meet operational needs.
  • Position requires periodic travel to attend programs and industry conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Minimum Education/Experience
  • 3 years experience leading and managing staff. Experience overseeing an annual budget of at least $100,000.

  • 5 years of sustained work developing successful programs at a museum or institution of higher learning.

  • Experience working with faculty and students.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills.

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to represent the organization in a variety of public settings.

Preferred:
Preferred Education/Experience
  • MA/PhD in education, museum studies, art history, or cultural studies.

  • Experience working in art museums, with special attention to candidates with a background in university art museums.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Bilingual in a language that relates to current UC Davis student demographics.
