Multimedia Specialist

We are seeking a Multimedia Specialist  who will work as part of a team to support the Digital Media Center's creative resources and is dedicated to helping students explore the creative use of emerging media and technology. The Specialist will assist students with technically challenging personal or academic projects They will design and teach workshops, coordinate and maintain DMC studio resources, organize special events, and work 1-on-1 to support student needs. In addition, they will work with and supervise a student staff team on departmental projects. As needed, they will research, analyze and make equipment purchasing recommendations, maintain tools and pioneer new digital art-making technologies through project exploration with students.

The Digital Media Center is part of the Office of Arts and Innovation, whose programming is focused on co-curricular arts and creative activities that provide opportunities for students to build communities and engage meaningfully with staff and peers in a wide variety of ways. The DMC supports students with personal, creative, entrepreneurial, academic, and campus engagement projects. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Digital Media Center, working closely with the Sr. Program Coordinator, and requires some evening and weekend lab coverage and event support throughout the year.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and instruct co-curricular multimedia workshop programming utilizing the hardware and software offerings available at the DMC.
  • Maintain the workshop lesson plans and ensure they are up-to-date relative to current best practices and the resources available at the DMC.
  • Monitor, maintain, and coordinate repairs for relevant equipment, tools, and workspaces available at the DMC. Research and make purchasing recommendations for new equipment and software.
  • Work with Student Staff to develop and implement how-to guides and other printed and digital resources for utilizing the creative technology available at the DMC.
  • Plan, organize, and run special events such as guest artist talks, and collaborate with other departments and student groups on activities relating to university signature events.
  • Support student needs with 1-on-1 project consultations.
  • Promote and document DMC programming.
  • Proactively learn new software and stay current with technology trends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

  • This 32-hour-per-week position typically requires two weekdays from 9 am – 5:30 pm and two weekdays from 3 pm - 9 pm.
  • Evening and weekend events are scheduled throughout the academic year (September – May), and participation is required.
  • This position is structured to support a working artist who maintains an active creative life outside of the center.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Fine Arts or related field. 
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master of Fine Arts Degree is preferred.
  • Five years of related experience is preferred, including teaching at the college level.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, DSLR camera equipment and fine-art photo printers.
  • Knowledge of audio and music production and recording.
  • Familiarity with 3D printers, electronics/maker tools, and 3D design a plus.
  • Knowledge of web design, HTML/CSS and iOS development/app programming is preferred.
