Job Summary

The Department of Aerospace Engineering is seeking a highly skilled and experienced full-time Multimedia Designer. This role will provide multimedia and web support for all program and partnership initiatives across the department’s portfolio. The ideal candidate is a creative, well-rounded, detail-oriented team-player with a broad background in implementing multimedia and web strategies, who has experience working effectively with diverse audiences across multiple communications channels, and brings a dedication to quality.

Who We Are

The University of Michigan’s Department of Aerospace Engineering is the first collegiate aeronautics program in the United States—started in 1914, with more than 6,000 aerospace engineers who graduated over the past 100 years.  It currently has 18 staff members, 29 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, and approximately 354 undergraduate and 182 graduate students.

Responsibilities*

Web Design, Development, and Maintenance (45%)

  • Develop and administer web-based properties incorporating best practices in web development to effectively engage key audiences. Understand customer needs and develop website layout and design with efficient navigation.

  • Regularly monitor and manage the department's website for necessary updates and enhancements. Post new content (news stories, updates etc). Facilitate a content management and news schedule in partnership with department leadership, the strategic Initiatives manager, and senior in-house writer.

  • Develop and maintain one-off pages on the Aero website as needed

  • Analyze and report user feedback and statistics using Google Analytics to provide guidance and recommendations toward continuous website improvement

  • Ensure strong site optimization, strategic UX design, and adherence to digital accessibility standards

  • Design, develop, and maintain an internal staff and faculty web portal. Work with key stakeholders to determine content and structure for the internal website.

  • Design and develop google websites as needed (for student association, internal institutes etc)

  • Design WordPress websites for associated institutes: U-M Space Institute, and more

Multimedia Design and Development (35%)

  • Collaborate with leadership to determine multimedia needs for all messaging channels and strategies, and ensure alignment with other efforts and branding

  • Create display screens for courses, announcements, events, and more

  • Create videos as needed: virtual grad ceremony, event promotion, and more

  • Design one-off logos for new courses or internal institutes

  • Design Aero branded graphics for website, social media, email, and videos

  • Manage social media accounts and report on analytics for Aero’s social media channels. Execute social media campaigns

  • Create surveys/Google forms/polls as needed. Report analytics to leadership

  • Serve as the go-to person for department’s multimedia design needs (logos, flyers, brochures, -shirt design, giveaways, google slides, PPT etc)

  • Contribute to the overall department’s social media efforts/strategy (social media campaigns for student and alumni engagement)

  • Other duties as assigned

Email Communication Strategy and Execution (15%)

  • Design, develop and execute the weekly student e-newsletters. 

  • Design and develop the monthly alumni e-newsletters to alumni & friends using GetResponse marketing email software. 

  • Produce monthly online analytics reports for internal audiences. 

  • Design and develop email campaigns for various groups and events. Work in partnership with the communications team, grad, and undergrad office to develop content and messaging. 

Graphic Design (5%)

  • Design the Aerospace annual report magazine. 

  • Design flyer/brochure/print assets for events, new courses, and programs (AMP, MEng, M-SAAVE, etc)

  • Enhance professional appearance of various department leadership presentation materials


Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in multimedia and web design, development, and implementation

  • Excellent multimedia and web design skills as demonstrated by a portfolio of work that is original, creative, imaginative, and innovative

  • Professional experience creating and executing marketing and/or communications strategies for internal and external audiences utilizing multi-media, digital, and traditional channels

  • Demonstrated excellent skills and experience in a professional setting with multimedia-related software applications: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), video/audio-editing software (i.e. Premier), etc.

  • Demonstrated professional experience working with front-end web-related software, content management systems and tools such as Word Press, HTML, XHTML, or CSS.

  • Experience in web page SEO optimization including headlines, meta tags, page titles, alt tags, description, etc.

  • Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Docs, and other productivity tools.

  • Solid working knowledge of branding development and standards, style guidelines, digital and print collateral requirements, and related processes.

  • Excellent project management, organizational, analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to set priorities and successfully handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines and strategic goals

  • Demonstrated success in working in a fast-paced environment that requires flexibility and adaptability. Able to handle and be comfortable with ambiguity.

  • Strong collaborative working style with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in a dynamic environment, and to contribute to a positive work environment that values respect, listening, and learning.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 

  • Ability to exercise appropriate discretion and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information

  • Awareness of best practices in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and working with diverse groups of people

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy


Desired Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in art, graphic design, multimedia, communications, digital media, web design, or related field

  • Knowledge of design as it pertains to email marketing; best practices for creating optimized email templates and responsive design

  • Experience and skills in original photography, videography, audio, podcasting, and editing

  • Demonstrated professional experience working with digital tools and technologies such as Google Analytics, GetResponse, Google website, and all social media, LinkedIn, Google AdWords, etc.

  • Experience working in a higher education academic environment

  • Experience working effectively and collaboratively with faculty


Additional Information

This position will have the option for a hybrid work schedule (some time in the office and some time remote).
