Job Summary

 

Through the general direction of a supervisor, the duties of the Sheet Metal/Weld Shops Crew Chief include but are not limited to performing and supervising the repair, installation, and preventative maintenance of university sheet metal and welded systems/jobs utilizing a strong knowledge of blueprints, schematics, computers programs, technical manuals and catalogs.  The Crew Chief must work with vendors, engineers, co-workers, and other administrators as necessary in the performance of duties associated with sheet metal and steel fabrication, erection, etc.  Assist Supervision in prioritizing and monitoring activities of personnel and functions.  Assist personnel in troubleshooting and completion of work orders in a timely manner.   Take appropriate action to correct material and personnel bottlenecks including communications to vendors and expeditors.  Identify and correct both personnel and equipment safety issues and advise Supervision of corrective action taken to prevent reoccurrences.  Create, print, and close SAP work orders.  The Sheet Metal/Weld Shops Crew Chief is subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies and vandalism


What you will be doing :
  • Prioritize and supervise the activities of Sheet Metal and Welding employees.
  • Functions as the Supervisor in his/her absence
  • Perform and supervise the repair, installation, and preventative maintenance of university sheet metal and steel fabricated property
  • Utilize but not limited to using blueprints, schematics, computer programs, technical manuals, catalogs, vendors, engineers,   co-workers, administrators, and Human Resources as aide in performance of duties
  • Participate in long term planning consistent with department goals
  • Make emergency calls to vendors and use university transportation to pick up off campus materials
  • In conjunction with the Supervisor, is responsible for onsite material inventory and work place cleanliness including equipment rooms, Shops and public areas
  • Make the location the final contact after a customer submits a request
  • Advise the customer of progress and estimated work completion date    
  • At the Supervisor discretion, submit accident reports, advise Supervisor of the infraction and corrective action taken to prevent reoccurrences
  • Works with DTI on the annual certification
  • Assist Supervisor in performance evaluation of employees and make recommendations 
  • Makes daily equipment room and public area inspections
  • Assist Supervisor with semi-annual  public area surveys
  • Develop and facilitate at least 1 safety and 1 Craft related training class per year

What you must have :
  •     High School diploma/GED required.  
  •     College coursework or Vocational/Technical school preferred.  
  •     Five or more years of experience in sheet metal and/or weld fabrication.    
  •     Demonstrated leadership skills required.  
  •     Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.  
  •     Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations required.  
  •     Computer skills/familiarity with word processor and spreadsheets required.  
  •     Must have craft knowledge including but not limited to Carpentry, Electrical, General Construction, Indoor Air Quality, Masonry, Refrigeration, Sheet Metal or Welding but specializes in Sheet Metal and/or Welding practices.  
  •     Ability to successfully complete supervisory training courses.  
  •     Must be able to learn and work with SAP.  
  •     Valid driver's license required.

Minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience
