The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in a wide range of fields in Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 30 faculty (including TTF and NTTF), many of whom have large research grants, 42 graduate students, 90 undergraduate majors, seven research associates, ten post-docs, two classified employees, eight student employees, emeriti faculty, and various visiting professors, courtesy professors, and career and pro tem instructors.

The University of Oregon, Department of Earth Sciences seeks a skilled field worker to pursue our mission of real-time, multi-hazards monitoring. Based in Eugene, OR, this position travels across Oregon and adjacent states to maintain and operate a monitoring system that collects scientific data to increase public safety and resiliency.

We seek an engineer to oversee the design and maintenance of digital monitoring systems and related telemetry. We value the capacity to work independently with minimal direct supervision as well as in a highly coordinated fashion within a collegial team, both in the lab and the field. The position involves coordinating with the federal, state, and local agencies to define and employ best practices and to communicate technological innovations.

Additional Expectations of the Position:
• Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather
• Ability to carry equipment for short distances over uneven terrain
• Ability to operate 4x4 vehicle in off-road environments

• B.S. in engineering field
• Two years of related experience

• Proven ability to work well both autonomously and in a team-oriented group and to serve as technical lead.
• Demonstrated knowledge of National Electric Code compliance

• M.S. in engineering field
• Knowledge of and experience with logical design and structured databases
• Experience using computers with Unix and Linux operating systems
• Experience with seismic or related data acquisition systems
• Design experience in radio telemetry systems in both the licensed and unlicensed spectrum
• Experience in internet networking protocols
• Experience with deploying scientific equipment in remote field settings
